Iran Israel Conflict: University of Michigan Students calls for Ceasefire in Gaza, Changes to policy

Joining, scores of protestors in the USA, students and faculties of the University of Michigan protested against the university’s proposed disruptive activities policy and rejection of calls to divest from companies that could profit from Israel's war in Gaza. The students also protested against Israel's military campaign.

A few students and faculty held a teach-in event at the Diag and a picket on Central Campus. Bilal Butt, an associate professor at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability, was the opening speaker at the teach-in. “You have people who weren’t able to access basic needs in society. You have elderly who are unable to access chemo treatment, children whose schools have been bombed,” he said of the situation in Gaza, as reported by Michigan Public.

The protesting students want a complete divestment from companies that benefit from and support Israel’s war in Gaza. Demonstrators also raised concerns over a proposed disruptive activity policy that would ban any protest that would disrupt school activities. Protestors could be put on probation, suspended, or expelled.

The University of Michigan President Santo Ono said in a letter, "The protesters who disrupted the annual honours undergraduate graduation ceremony brought profound disappointment to students, parents, grandparents, siblings, and other relatives and friends. We all must understand that, while protest is valued and protected, disruptions are not. One group's right to protest does not supersede the right of others to participate in a joyous event," as reported by CBS News.
