Japan's Tsukuba University to open campus in Malaysia

The new campus of Tsukuba University is going to target students from Malaysia and neighbouring countries to equip them with skills to solve global problems affecting Southeast Asian countries.
Tsukuba University becomes the first Japanese university to set up an overseas branch granting degrees. The university is all set to open a campus in Kuala Lumpur offering interdisciplinary courses in September.
The new department is named "School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design," and it will target students from Malaysia and neighboring countries. The courses offered by the new department claim to equip students with skills to help solve global problems affecting Southeast Asian countries, the University of Tsukuba said, as reported by English Kyodonews.

The new department will offer courses in humanities and social sciences, and statistics and environmental studies with Japanese language classes a required subject. Those who will complete the four-year curriculum will receive a Bachelor of Arts and Science. The student intake will be 40 and the university is planning to dispatch around 40 faculty members for the classes, which will be offered in both English and Japanese.

Recently, the Japanese ambassador to India Hiroshi F Suzuki invited students from India to Japan to study and work in the Asian country. “I have one message for Indian people, particularly, to young people of India. Please go to Japan to study and work. If you are a student, it’s so easy to get a visa,” he said in the video interview. “If you are a student, all you have to do is present your student ID. I am encouraging young Indian people to go to Japan to get skill training and job opportunities," as reported by Indian Express.
As per the data of the Ministry of External Affairs, in 2022, a total of 1302 Indian students were present in Japan for higher studies. Japan gives an affordable study abroad option as compared to the US, UK and Australia.

Japanese Government Scholarships
To attract international students from other countries including India, and to promote mutual understanding with foreign countries, Japan offers various scholarships for Research Students, Undergraduate Students, College of Technology Students, Specialized Training College Students, Japanese Studies Students, and Teacher Training Students. Applications for most of these scholarships are closed for 2024, however for Research Students, the scholarship is open for 2025. The application period is from April 4 to May 3, 2024.
