5 Common Challenges Indian Students Face Abroad and How to Overcome Them

Globalisation has boosted the trend of studying abroad. Many Indian student today aspire to study abroad to gain international exposure, broaden their horizons, and access world-class education. However, there are challenges also associated with the study abroad journey that the students face while pursuing their education outside the country. This could be anything from academic pressures to cultural shock. It is better to be aware of these problems in advance to tackle them in a better way.

5 Common Challenges For Indian Students Studying Abroad are:

Table of contents
  • Language Barrier
  • Mental Health and Well-Being
  • Climate Challenges
  • Housing and Accommodation
  • Managing academics and personal responsibilities

Language Barrier

It is one of the most common problems students face as every country has its local languages. You might not meet people speaking in English everywhere. The good thing is that the Education will majorly be in English and you can try to learn the local language by interacting with peers and trying to speak the local language slowly, try learning the basics of the language and you will soon understand as much as to manage yourself at the foreign country. Learning a new language can also be fun at times.

Mental Health and Well-Being

This is not only a problem for study abroad aspirants but is a big problem everywhere. It is extremely important to keep track of the state of your mental health. The challenges of adapting to a new environment and the pressure to succeed academically can take a toll on the mental health and well-being of Indian students abroad. The solution can be to maintain a healthy study-life balance, prioritize self-care, and seek support when experiencing stress, anxiety and homesickness.

Many universities provide services to international students by providing them with mental health resources, support groups and counselling services. Also, it is important to be in touch with family back home and practice some kind of meditation.

Climate Challenges

It is wise for aspirants to research the climate conditions much in advance to face the situation in a better way. However, having knowledge also will not completely help to predict the weather. The students need to plan their clothing essentials as per the weather of the country and they can also buy it from a second-hand clothing store to get a fair deal.

Housing and Accommodation

Even if you research your institute and other things, finding a place to live in a foreign country can be daunting for Indian students, especially when faced with unfamiliar rental processes and housing options. To overcome this, students should start their accommodation search well in advance, search for available housing options including off-campus, on-campus apartments, and homestay options. Also while selecting the final one consider factors such as safety, location, and affordability.

Managing academics and personal responsibilities

While managing everything and trying to overcome the challenges you face during your study abroad journey, managing the academics can be challenging as you will not be in the comfort of your home country. This is extremely important as you are taking all the pain only to get your academic degree from a foreign land. The students need to put their energies into multiple daily chores from cooking, cleaning, laundry, college assignments, maybe a part-time job, and study. This is not going to be an easy task. Try to plan your days in advance, use sticky notes, and also prioritise everything.
