History
The history of LIU goes back to 1926, when the New York Board of Regents granted LIU a provisional charter. In 1929, the university merged with Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, adding a popular major to its offerings. In 1931, the first class of LIU graduated that comprised of 312 students. In 1951, recognizing the educational needs of the growing number of families moving to suburbs, LIU purchased the 177-acre estate. In 2004, the main residence of Hillwood estate underwent a three-year restoration. It is now known as Winnick House.
