To strengthen the academic partnership between Indian and Canada, the Canadian Prime Minister announced $100 million scholarships for Indian students along with other provisions to bring back Indian students to study in Canada after a two-year halt. More details are provided below.

Canada Announces Scholarships for Indians

Indian students constitute one of the largest student communities in Canada. Admissions were tough, with Canada student visa rejection rates reaching 80% and above, which became a concern in 2025. To mend this, and bring back the larger student body chunk to study in Canada, new strategies and plans are taking shape. This will encourage Indian students to consider studying in Canada, which will come with different benefits.

Canada-India Academic Ties Take a New Turn in 2026

On March 2, 2026, Mar Carney, PMO Canada, issued a statement that brought back a silver lining for Indian students to study in Canada again. In his statement, he has highlighted three main points:

  1. $100 million in funding for Indian students from the University of Toronto. This, in turn, will open up around 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian applicants.
  2. 13 new MoUs have been signed between the Canadian and Indian universities as part of new talent taking part in exchange programs and research work.
  3. There are plans to launch three new hybrid study locations in India to facilitate deeper collaboration.
  4. Also, more exchange programs will be aligned between Canada and India to encourage performing arts, visual arts, music, books, entertainment technologies and other creative industries.

Canadian & Indian Universities Partnership

Around 13 Indian and Candian universities have announced partnership for different purposes - research, exchange programs and others. These universities are as follows:

  • Education in Canada for Indians will become more affordable with more scholarships.
  • Better exchange program opportunities.
  • Learning at new designated centres for innovation.
  • And, Indian students will get more exposure for being career-ready as well.
