Canada Announces $100 Million Scholarships for Indians
To strengthen the academic partnership between Indian and Canada, the Canadian Prime Minister announced $100 million scholarships for Indian students along with other provisions to bring back Indian students to study in Canada after a two-year halt. More details are provided below.
Indian students constitute one of the largest student communities in Canada. Admissions were tough, with Canada student visa rejection rates reaching 80% and above, which became a concern in 2025. To mend this, and bring back the larger student body chunk to study in Canada, new strategies and plans are taking shape. Canada-India Academic Ties Take a New Turn in 2026
On March 2, 2026, Mar Carney, PMO Canada, issued a statement that brought back a silver lining for Indian students to study in Canada again. In his statement, he has highlighted three main points:
- $100 million in funding for Indian students from the University of Toronto. This, in turn, will open up around 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian applicants.
- 13 new MoUs have been signed between the Canadian and Indian universities as part of new talent taking part in exchange programs and research work.
- There are plans to launch three new hybrid study locations in India to facilitate deeper collaboration.
- Also, more exchange programs will be aligned between Canada and India to encourage performing arts, visual arts, music, books, entertainment technologies and other creative industries.
