IDP Education has announced that the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in India will become completely computer-based from September 2026. From September onwards, candidates appearing for the IELTS exam in India will no longer have the option to take the traditional IELTS on Paper test.

Instead, students will be able to choose from two computer-based IELTS formats, IELTS on Computer and IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper). The changes in IELTS exam 2026 aims to provide greater flexibility, faster result processing, more test date availability, and a better overall testing experience.

According to IDP, the exam pattern, question types, scoring system, and level of difficulty will remain exactly the same. Candidates planning to take IELTS in 2026 should note that August 22, 2026 will be the last IELTS on Paper test date in India.

In this format:

  • Listening section of the IELTS exam will be conducted on computer

  • Reading section will also be conducted on computer

  • IELTS Writing section will only be conducted on paper

  • Speaking test face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner

The Writing questions will appear on the computer screen, but answers will be written using a pen on the IELTS Writing Answer Sheet.
