Trump Signs Order To Shut Down US Education Department

Study in US: While Republicans are cheering this development, education advocates and Democrats warn that the removing Education Department will deepen inequalities in the US education system.
After the US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order for dismantling the US Department of Education, millions of American parents and students are reportedly concerned.
While signing the order, Trump said, "The order would begin eliminating the federal Department of Education once and for all.”
“We’re going to shut it down and shut it down as quickly as possible. It’s doing us no good. We’re going to return education back to the states where it belongs," said Trump.
While reacting to this, Dominique Baker, a professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware, said to Vox, "The Department of Education plays an even bigger role with colleges and universities. The agency ensures that applications for federal financial aid are available to students, that the information students enter is sent to colleges, and that the money is actually disbursed," as reported by Firstpost.
Trump's Removal Of Education Department Likely To Face Legal Challenges
Eliminating the department will not be a smooth process as the order is expected to face legal challenges. The White House said that they would cut parts of the department which is within legal boundaries.
Who Will Be Most Impacted
There are millions of US students who get federal student loans to pay for higher education which is administered and overseen by the agency.
However, according to BBC report, there is a misconception that the federal education department helps in the functioning of US schools and setting curriculum but the fact is it is mostly operated by local districts and states. A maximum of US children go to public schools which do not charge them anything and it is run by local officials.
America's largest teachers' union said that "Trump doesn't care about opportunity for all kids".
American Federation of Teachers said, "No-one likes bureaucracy, and everyone's in favour of more efficiency, so let's find ways to accomplish that. But don't use a 'war on woke' to attack the children living in poverty and the children with disabilities."
