University Of Southampton: Construction Of New £180m Education Building Commences To Enhance Student Experience

The University of Southampton is establishing a new £180m education building at the Highfield Campus. The construction work of this new five-storey building has commenced a few days ago. The idea is to improve the student's study experience by combining the new studying space and teaching with social and wellbeing facilities.

The new education building is expected to be completed by the Autumn of 2027. It will house wellbeing facilities, cycling amenities, a cafe, and indoor and outdoor social spaces for students. It will host study areas, new lecture theatres and seminar rooms.

Professor Mark E. Smith, Vice Chancellor of the University of Southampton commented, “This groundbreaking represents more than just the construction of a new building. It symbolises our dedication to fostering an innovative and inspiring learning environment for our students and faculties. This space will be a hub of creativity, collaboration and academic excellence, ensuring that the University of Southampton continues to be a sector leader in education.”

The new building will be the most sustainable building of the university till now. The space has been designed with a low-energy approach and fabric first, it will maximise the use of natural ventilation. The air source heat pump will be used to heat the building and solar panels will be added to part of the roof.

Lawrence Coomber, President of the Student Union commented, “This new teaching and learning building will be a game-changer for students at the University of Southampton. It will create a dynamic and inclusive space that supports collaboration, creativity, and academic success. We are thrilled to see the University investing in our future.”

University of Southampton Malaysia Campus Gets New Academic Provost

The university has announced the appointment of the new Academic Provost at the Malaysia campus. Professor Ehsan Mesbahi will be the new Academic Provost of the Malaysia campus.

Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President International and Engagement at the University of Southampton, said, “We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Professor Ehsan Mesbahi to the role of Academic Provost in Malaysia. The Malaysia campus will reflect and live our University’s overall vision of building an inclusive world where knowledge is applied to transform lives. I am confident that under Professor Mesbahi’s leadership it will continue to grow as an outstanding and important part of the University of Southampton. This is a pivotal time of transformation as we get ready to open our Delhi campus in August and continue to move forward on our journey to become a truly global University.”
