Oregon State University History
Oregon State University, though officially founded in 1868, has its roots that can be traced back to 1956. Back then it operated under the name Corvallis Academy, and was the first community school in the Corvallis area.
The academy was incorporated in 1958 and changed its name to Corvallis College. The college offered its first collegiate liberal arts curriculum, in 1865.
Thanks to the efforts of William Moreland and Senator CB Bellinger, under the Morrill Act of 1862, around 90,000 acres of land was granted to OSU, for the development of an agricultural college. William Jasper Kerr, played a key role in the college's transformation from a small regional school to one of national importance between 1907 and 1930.
1937, saw the institute rename to Oregon State College (OSC), that commissioned more cadets than any non-military institute in USA, to the country's efforts during World War II.
In 1961, it finally took over its current name: Oregon State University. OSU now houses more than 38,000 students from over 102 countries.
