Eligibility

  • Awarded to gifted students on admission to first year in any program at the Faculty of Music.
  • It is awarded on the basis of the academic merit.
  • All India Senior School Certificate (awarded by CBSE) or Indian School Certificate (awarded by CISCE).  Year 12 State Board Exams with excellent results will also be considered on an individual basis.
  • CBSE students interested in programs that require Calculus for admission, such as business, engineering, and science programs, must present Class XII Standard Mathematics for admission consideration. Class XII Applied Mathematics (new and old syllabus) will not meet the Calculus requirement.
  • All applicants must demonstrate musical proficiency on a primary instrument within an audition setting. 
  • Applicants may audition on any standard orchestral instrument, classical guitar, free bass accordion, harpsichord, piano, organ, voice, or any standard jazz instrument. The audition will also include musical skills tests such as aural skills and sight reading. 
  • The interview component will assess your general knowledge of music styles/form and provide an opportunity to share your experiences and goals with the panel.
  • All applicants must meet theory prerequisite requirements to ensure success in the first-year theory core.
  • The theory prerequisite vary from course to course , visit the course page for the specific prerequisites.
  • Keyboard proficiency is not an admission requirement for non-keyboard instrumentalists/vocalists, however piano skills at a Grade 3 (RCM) or equivalent level will help students in their studies. Keyboard Skills courses are included in the first-year curriculum for those without prior piano experience 
  • English Language Proficiency Requirements:
    • Duolingo English Test -  overall score of 120 with a score of 120 in Production. 

    • IELTS Academic - The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0. 

    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - The minimum requirement is an overall score of 65 with no part below 60. 

    • TOEFL iBT - The minimum requirement is a total score of 89 with 22 in each of Speaking and Writing.

  • English Language Proficiency Waiver :
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) English - The minimum requirement is a score of at least 4 (predicted or final) in Higher or Standard Level English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature. HL English B is not acceptable.

  • Applicants will be required to complete the supplementary application known as the Music Questionnaire by the posted application deadline.
    • Within the Music Questionnaire, applicants can apply for up to three (3) program choices and/or instruments within the Faculty of Music.
    • Applicants will also need to provide the following information within the application:
      • Biographical information & academic background
      • Major instrument(s) and other music background information
      • Audition repertoire selections
      • Jazz pre-screening video recording links (if you are applying to any of our jazz programs as one of your program choices)
      • Contact information for three (3) referees willing to provide a reference for you
      • Indicate how/when you will complete the theory prerequisite
      • Short essay (written response to three provided questions; 250-1000 words)

  • All applicants must submit transcripts for all high school and post-secondary studies attended.

Additional Information

  • Admission into composition within first-year is available through the Direct-Entry Composition program. This option is recommended for applicants who can demonstrate a significant commitment to music creation using traditional or contemporary Western-art music techniques. 
  • To be considered for Direct-Entry Composition, Applicants will need to submit a portfolio of recent compositions that includes the following:
    • Scores for at least four works totaling at least 15 minutes in duration, written for a variety of ensembles. This must exclude popular and commercial music, except as an addendum.
    • Demonstration of significant recent compositional activity and a willingness to explore and be challenged
    • Use of various methods of pitch organization, rhythmic structure, and motivic/thematic development
    • Use of accurate notation
    • Optional: You are welcome to submit recordings of performances of your works. In the case of electroacoustic works, a score is not necessary. Recordings of non-electroacoustic works submitted without a score will not be considered. A work for acoustic instruments recorded from a live or studio performance is not considered electroacoustic music.
  • At the interview, applicants will be expected to demonstrate:
    • Knowledge of repertoire, including recent compositions
    • Substantial insight into the music you have listened to and/or performed
    • Strong ability in ear training and music theory
