History
The teaching at Wrexham Campus started in 1887. At that time, the university was known as the Wrexham School of Science and Art. In 1924, the university started offering degrees. It became Denbighshire Technical Institute in 1927. As the institute grew, the development of the university’s main Plas Coch campus began and following the completion of developments in 1939, Denbighshire Technical College was born.
Then, three main colleges of the County of Clwyd merged namely Denbighshire Technical College, Cartrefle Teacher Training College, and Kelsterton College. The resulting North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) became one of the largest of its kind in Britain. Then, in 2008, NEWI gained university status and it became Glyndwr University. In 2023, the university re-branded itself and changed its name to Wrexham University.
