LBU was established in 1824 by Thomas Jefferson in Leeds, UK. Leeds Beckett's roots can be traced back to mid-12th Century Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey. Initially, it was established as Leeds Mechanics Institute in 1824. Later in 1913, the institute was renamed to City of Leeds Training College. In 1987, the university acquired its now-known name.
