The school founded in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, was created with the aim of educating students to serve & lead & to produce & share knowledge of critical public policy challenges facing the global community.
The institute's founders laid a major emphasis on proper understanding of the geographic regions of importance, & to create indviduals who could pave the way to embark on a post war world.
By 1967, it had expanded its network to eight regional institutes, before shifting base to Columbia University's east campus in 1971. It was renamed to School of International & Public Affairs in 1981.
