Commonly referred to as Marietta, the Marietta College is a privately-funded institution of higher education in Marietta city of Ohio State. The institution was set up in the year 1835. It has affiliation from the Council of Independent Colleges. The institution holds sports affiliation from the National Collegiate Athletic Association under Division III. It has collaboration with the University of International Relations located in Beijing, China.
Marietta has a beautiful campus comprising state-of-the-art academic, administrative and support facilities. The college extends counseling, medical and psychological services to the students and faculty at the Dr. J. Michael Harding Center for Health and Wellness, housed in Harrison Hall. It has six dining points on the campus that serve tasty, healthy and hygienic foods and beverages. The college provides accommodation to the students in its co-ed residence halls on the campus. Other on-campus facilities include a 4,400 square feet Planetarium, mailroom, bookstore, career center, library, IT services, and the College Police Department.
The Dyson Baudo Recreation Centre (DBRC) is the major venue for all the fitness and recreation facilities. It houses an indoor track, a fitness center, a crew training facility, a multipurpose room, a weight room, two racquetball courts, and four multipurpose courts. Besides this, there is a two-story climbing wall in the weight room, which is on the first floor of the building. It maintains 22 varsity teams of sports like basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball, football, volleyball, golf, track and field, lacrosse, cross country, and softball. They participate in the Ohio Athletic Conference as the Pioneers. To date, the college has this national championship six times.
Marietta has several departments that focus on areas like business, education, humanities, basic sciences, art and design, communication, economics, sports medicine, environmental science, religion and philosophy, performing arts, modern languages and English. It offers a total of 70 programs in various majors and minors. Besides, the college extends special programs like gender studies, investigative studies, and honors programs. At present, Marietta has about 1200 students from different corners of the world pursuing their degrees. The academic staff of the college comprises 103 full-time affiliates and 49 part-time associates, who are skilled and possess great knowledge in their respective subject areas. The student-faculty ratio at the college is 10:1.
Marietta College has a vast alumni network of 25,000 graduates. The institution takes pride in celebrating the achievements of its alumni and has thus maintained a Hall of Fame. It also maintains a separate list of those alumni who are highly successful and recognized for their contribution in their fields. Some notable names in the list are Kathy Brodsky (Poet and Author), Dane Dastillung (American Football Lineman), Nick Gehlfuss (Actor), Terence John Mulholland (Former Baseball Pitcher), Joy Williams (American Novelist), C. William O'Neill (Ohio's Former Governor), Don Schaly (Former Baseball Coach), F. Story Musgrave (Retired NASA Astronaut), Gary Kott (Award-Winning TV Writer) and Wilbur Lang Schramm (Communication Studies Discipline's Founding Father).
