Established on March 30, 1871, as a land-grant institution named Arkansas Industrial University, the University of Arkansas (the U of A) is one of the top-notch universities in the U.S. The flagship campus of the University of Arkansas System started operating in 1872 with a class of seven boys and a girl. Also, the total enrolment increased to over 100 students in the first year. In 1885, the university completed the work on a university hall, which is now known as 'Old Main'. The university's first class graduated in 1876 and awarded the first honorary degree in 1878. In the year 1899, the university acquired its current name following an editorial campaign by The Ozark.
Based in Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas has a beautiful 412-acre campus that features 378 well-maintained buildings, green spaces, parking areas and pathways. The university provides excellent academic, administrative, recreational and support facilities to ensure an outstanding learning experience to students. The university libraries, with a unique and rare collection of resources in printed and digital form, are the major source of information for learning, teaching and research. The institution provides on-site accommodation to students in its 20 suites, apartments and community-style residence halls. The university has 10 academic schools and colleges that offer over 200 programmes in agriculture, education, architecture, business, arts, sciences, health professions, design, food and life sciences, engineering and creative writing. It provides 94 undergraduates, 79 postgraduate, 39 doctoral and specialist and 27 graduate certificate programmes to cater to different career requirements of students.
As per Fall 2019, the total enrolment at the university was 27,559. The university has about 3,150 staff members including 1,401 faculty affiliates. The student-faculty ratio at the institution is 19:1. By the end of FY2019, the endowment market value was $1.221 billion, while the university registered research expenses worth $175 million by the end of FY2018. With sports affiliation from National Collegiate Athletic Association, it maintains eight men's and eleven women's teams in thirteen sports. The teams participate in the South-eastern Conference and other competitions as the Razorbacks. Additionally, there are around 350 registered student organizations that focus on religious, global, cultural, honorary, professional services and special interests. The university boasts of an extensive network of alumni that includes Brent Bradshaw (Writer for television), Barry A. Vann (Author), Ed. Wilson (Fox Broadcasting Company's President), Corey Beck (Ex-NBA player) and T. J. Holmes (Ex-CNN anchor)
