The University of Pittsburgh first opened its doors in 1787 under the name: Pittsburgh Academy, as part of a log cabin on the American Frontier. The institute was founded by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, after he put a petition in the Pennsylvania's state assembly for the development of an academic institution in the region. His idelogy of "the strengh of a state greatly consists in the superior mental powers of its inhabitants", was enough to put plans of the establihment of "Pitt" in motion. The institute offered its first degree in 1823 & has gone to become one of the most prominent institutions for higher education in the United States.
