History
Wayland Baptist University was established in 1908. In 1910, the first students arrived. Then, in 1951, Wayland made history as the first four-year Liberal Arts College in the former Confederate states three years before Brown v. Board of Education. Then, in the 1970s, external campuses of this university opened. Also, the university introduced a Bachelor of Applied Science course.
In the 1980s, with the transition from Wayland Baptist College to Wayland Baptist University, this university expanded its graduate programs and lifelong learning initiatives. In the 2000s, this university launched its virtual campus. This innovation helped WBU become the fourth-largest Southern Baptist university in the U.S. by 2003.
