GSU History
GA State began in a rented space in downtown Atlanta, as the Evening School of Commerce of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Wayne S. Kell took over as the first director of GSU Atlanta and was replaced by Dr. George M. Sparks in 1928, who also took over as the first president of the university. It soon became an independent college and was renamed to the Georgia State College of Business Administration. After expanding its mission, it again got renamed to Georgia State College. 1969 saw it take over its present-day name. It continued to expand over the rest of the 20th century, and today stands as one of the best universities in Georgia.
