History
The history of UNC Charlotte goes back to the year 1946 when Charlotte Center was opened, offering classes to students in the facilities of Charlotte’s Central High School. After 3 years, the state closed the centers. The Charlotte Center was taken over by the city school district and operated as Charlotte College, offering the first two years of college courses. In 1961, Charlotte College moved its growing student body into two new buildings on what was to become a 1,000-acre campus. Three years later, the North Carolina General Assembly approved bills making Charlotte College, a 4-year state-supported institution. In 1965, the legislature approved bills creating UNCC, the fourth campus of the statewide university system. At present, the university is growing exponentially. Then in 1969, the first master's degree were established and 1993, the doctoral programs were authorized. In 2000, UNCC was re-classified as a Doctoral / Research university. In 2018, UNC Charlotte-Main light rail station opened.
