Tulane University History
The origins of Tulane University can be traced back to 1834 when it was founded as the Medical College of Louisiana.
- By the year 1847, the Medical College of Louisiana was a newly established public institute, the University of Louisiana.
- Because of the donation of Paul Tulane, the University of Louisiana was transformed into Tulane University
- In 1861, Tulane University closed its doors because of the Civil War and then, the classes resumed in 1865
- Then, in 1885, the University of Tulane established as a Graduate Division, then it later became the Graduate School
- Then, in 1886, H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College was established as Tulane’s co-ordinate college for women
- In July 2014, President Mike Fitts was named the 15th President of Tulane
