Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is a private research university in St Louis, Missouri. It was founded by Louis William Valentine DuBourg. Saint Louis University History
Saint Louis University was founded on Nov 16, 1818, as Saint Louis Academy by Louis Valentine DuBourg - the Bishop of Louisiana and the Floridas. The university of placed under the supervision of the Reverend Francois Niel and Others of the Saint Louis Cathedral's secular clergy. In 1820, Saint Louis Academic's name was changed to Saint Louis College. In 1827, Saint Louis College was put in the care of the Society of Jesus by Bishop Dubourg. Saint Louis College received its charter as a university by act of the Missouri Legislature. In 1829, St Louis University moved to Washington Avenue and Ninth, today the site of America's Center. SLU became one of the first Catholic universities to give laypeople more power over the affairs of the school in 1967. Board chairman Paul Reinert stepped down to be succeeded by layman Daniel Schlafly.
