Saint Louis University History
The university began as the Saint Louis Academy thanks to the efforts of Louis Valentine DuBourg, the Bishop of Louisiana and Florida. The university was placed under the supervision of the Reverend Francois Niel and Others of the Saint Louis Cathedral's secular clergy. In 1820, it was renamed to the Saint Louis College. In 1827, Saint Louis College was put in the care of the Society of Jesus by Bishop Dubourg. The college received its charter as a university by act of the Missouri Legislature. In 1829, it moved to Washington Avenue and 9th.
