Realistic life experience
Tips: If you're looking into this, just know that coming from a heavy technical engineering background into the film program means you're basically paying full freight. Since I transitioned over from a tech field to learn the ropes of the film industry, there weren't really any specific cross-discipline scholarships or fee discounts available for me, so I had to fund the whole thing out of pocket. You definitely need to sort your budget out before you sign up. But if you look past the massive price tag, the actual experience is awesome. The student crowd is great because you're constantly around highly creative people at the VCA campus, and the overall vibe is just brilliant. Melbourne itself is an amazing city to live in if you're trying to break into the creative scene. Even though it's a massive pivot from engineering to film production and a big financial investment, the community, the campus vibe, and the connections you make here make the whole journey completely satisfying.
Likes (Post study jobs): I gave post-study jobs a 5 out of 5 because the entire environment at UniMelb essentially primes you to get hired the second you graduate. The whole vibe on campus is awesome. Because the lecturers are top-tier, you're always picking up new things and actually staying hyped about your major. You aren't just stuck sitting in a lecture theatre all day. The university throws tons of industry events, career fairs, and networking nights right on campus. These events are massive for your career because they don't just help you clarify your professional goals—they connect you directly with major employers looking to hire Melbourne grads. Plus, because the student community is so active, it's super easy to make close friends who end up becoming your professional network later on. Between the reputation of the uni, the solid backing from the lecturers, and all the corporate connections you build at campus events, finding a great job after finishing your degree becomes a whole lot easier.
Dislikes (Part time work): I rated part-time work low because there is a massive disconnect between the classroom and the job market. Look, the professors here are brilliant—they are insanely talented, have a ridiculous amount of knowledge, and use the simplest real-world examples to break down complex concepts. Academically, you're getting incredible exposure. But the brutal reality of UniMelb is that the workload these professors give you is so intense that actually maintaining a part-time job without destroying your GPA is borderline impossible. On top of that, competition for on-campus casual roles at Parkville is fierce, and the university doesn't really do much to help you secure flexible work that fits around your timetable. If you look for retail or hospitality gigs in the Melbourne CBD, you're competing with thousands of other international students all fighting for the same casual shifts, all while trying to manage the strict student visa work hour caps. So while the teaching quality is top-tier, the university environment makes balancing or even finding a decent part-time job a massive struggle.
