University College London History
The University College London first opened its doors back in 1826, under the name: University of London or London University, thanks to the efforts of its founders who were inspired by the ideas of Jeremy Bentham. It was the first university in London, and the first in England that was entirely secular.
1828 saw the university welcome its first batch of students, and in 1837, the University College Hospital was established. In 1878, it became the first university in the UK to set up a student union and admit women. King George V and Queen Mary visited in 1927 to celebrate 100 years of UCL.
13 years later, however, the university had to bear serious damage as part of World War 2. The university began awarding its own degrees in 2005.
