History
Boston University was founded in 1839. It began as the Newbury Biblical Institute. Boston's history goes back to 1869 when it was officially chartered. In 1875, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in the university’s laboratory. In 1877, BU became the first American university to award a PhD to a woman (Helen Magill White). In the year 1938, the Charles River campus of the university opened. By 1936, the student body at BU included 10,300+ men and women.
