History
Boston University was founded in 1839. It began as the Newbury Biblical Institute. BU originated in 1869 when it was officially chartered. In 1875, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in the university’s laboratory. Then, in 1876, Borden Parker Bowne was appointed professor of Philosophy. He is known for his contributions to personalism, a philosophical branch of Liberal Theology. Then, in 1877, BU became the first American university to award a PhD to a woman (Helen Magill White). In the year 1938, the Charles River campus of the university opened. By 1936, the student body at BU included 10,300+ men and women. Then, in 1996, Boston University and the City of Boston announced the merger of Boston University Medical Center Hospital and Boston City Hospital, creating the Boston Medical Center. Then, in 2012, Boston University joined the Association of American Universities (AAU). In 2017, Times Higher Education named BU an ‘International Powerhouse’, based on the strength of the university’s research.
