History
Boston University was founded in 1839. It began as the Newbury Biblical Institute. Boston's history goes back to 1869 when it was officially chartered. In 1875, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in the university’s laboratory. In 1877, BU became the first American university to award a PhD to a woman (Helen Magill White).
