Founded in 1843, Bishop's University (BU) is a small institution of higher education in Lennoxville city of Sherbrooke, Canada. The goal of setting this institution was to offer the country a sound and liberal education. Royal Charter of 1853 granted it the right to award degrees. Until 1947, the institution was managed by the Church of England. It has affiliations from the Quebec Student Sport Federation, Canadian Bureau for International Education, International Association of Universities and the Canadian University Press. It also has accreditation from Universities Canada.
BU has a 550-acre campus set in a beautiful setting surrounded by rivers, farms, forests and hills. The campus features a total of 25 state-of-the-art buildings, green spaces, parking areas and pathways. The institution provides excellent academic, administrative, recreational, athletic and support facilities for the students. Learning and research are done in smart classrooms, laboratories and practice centres equipped with modern technology and high-tech equipment. The library system of BU consists of two units, each holding a comprehensive collection of digital and printed resources for teaching, learning and research.
The John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre houses an 800-seat arena, an indoor pool, a music recital hall, daycare, a historic chapel and three gyms. The institution maintains seven varsity teams for sports including basketball, hockey, soccer, golf, lacrosse and rugby that represent the institution in various events like the Alligators. The campus features an art gallery, a theatre and a golf club. BU provides accommodation to students in its seven on-campus residence halls with rooms equipped with necessary furniture and bed linen. There are several dining points on the campus where the students can enjoy tasty and healthy meals and beverages. Other on-campus facilities include a medical and counselling centre, print shop and a writing centre.
The academic structure consists of two faculties (Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Sciences) and two schools (School of Education and Williams School of Business). The students can pursue their degrees in various disciplines of arts, sciences, business and education. Current enrolment (Fall 2019 statistics) is 2,961 total student body from all Canadian provinces and territories, 30 states of the USA, and 79 countries. Student body remains at approximately 55% females and 45% males. About 29% of the student population comprises international students, with 24% pursuing degrees and 5% as exchange students.
Bishop's University has a large alumni network of over 19,000 graduates living in different nations across the globe. The alumni list includes some notable names like Jim Corcoran (Singer), Douglas Charles Abbott (Politician), Steve Zatylny (Former Football Player), Ralph Barker Gustafson (Professor and Poet), Norman Webster (Journalist), Galt MacDermot (Musician), Damian Pettigrew (Filmmaker, Producer and Author) and Elie Ngoyi (Professional Footballer).
