Mount Royal University is a public university with high-tech university grounds and environmentally friendly buildings in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was granted a charter from the Alberta government in 1910 and thus it became a university. It has since provided personalized learning that fosters the success and satisfaction of students. Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitshitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina, and the Lyarhe Nakoda. The city of Calgary is also home to the Metis Nation. MRU has a campus with state-of-the-art classrooms and amazing recreation facilities, amazing recreation facilities, a world-class concert hall, award-winning eco-buildings and impressive residences. Mount Royal University provides many services and supports to students on the campus including; Cougars Campus Store, Food and Drink Options On-Campus, Recreation’s 40 ft climbing wall, Riddel Library and Learning Centre, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, Wellness Services and the MRU Injury & Prevention Clinic and Student Association’s Wyckham House. Maclean's Magazine ranked Mount Royal University in the top 10 universities in Canada for 2021.
In spring 2021, the Government of Alberta announced that Mount Royal University will receive USD50 million in capital funding over three years to expand student access to post-secondary education in Alberta. The University is planning to use these funds to renovate former Conservatory spaces in the W wing into four new classrooms, two 78-student standard classrooms, a 56-student flexible learning space and a 56-student active learning classroom. There will also be study alcoves in the main corridor. Mount Royal University acceptance rate is around 18% for its UG programs making it highly selective in its admission process.
The university offers 37 degree courses, 11 certificate courses, 7 diploma courses, 5 occupational diplomas and certificates, and 6 alternative entrance options, with a total of 56 programs across its 6 faculties. The Faculty of Arts teaches subjects; Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies, English, Languages and Cultures, Humanities, Interior Design, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. The Faculty of Business and Communication Studies comprises two schools; Bissett School of Business and School of Communication Studies and teaches subjects like; Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Finance. The Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension teaches subjects like; Academic upgrading, arts and design etc. The Faculty of Health, Community and Education teaches subjects like; Child studies, Education and Health etc. The Faculty of Science and Technology teaches subjects like; Biology, Chemistry, Physics etc.
As per the university website the academic year of 2019/2020 had a total of 14,896 students. Out of these, 75 per cent of students are from Calgary, 1.9 per cent are international students, and 6.1 per cent are self-identified indigenous students as a proportion of all students in all ministry-approved programs.
Mount Royal University has two residence complexes – West Residence and East Residence. The residences can accommodate about 1,000 students and they are designed for independent student living. Residences are available in either apartment or townhouse units. All students residing in accommodations have private, lockable bedrooms and share living rooms and kitchens with their unit mates. East and West both the residences are just a few minute’s walk away from MRU facilities and services.
Mount Royal University has a strong community of alumni in more than 100 countries. Some of the most notable alumni of Mount Royal University are; Bruce Ian McCulloch (Canadian Actor), Doris Anderson (Canadian Author), and Norman Kwong (Former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta) among many more.
