My university life transition from India to Germany
Tips: It took me a while to get adjusted to life here, as it is different from India. I got to know about student initiatives, and I joined them. From then on, my life was different. There are different scholarship options available for students. Every year, they can check and apply.
Likes (Public transportation): While city is walkable and it's rare to use a bus unless you are staying a bit far from the university. University is located in the Center of the city and all the buildings are Next to each other. Also as a student you get Deutschland ticket where you can use it to travel whole country.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are a lot of architectural and civil engineering companies around if a student can speak German they are very high chances of getting a job directly here if not it is a bit struggle to find a job in the city

Tips: Bauhaus University is small, international, and project-oriented. Weimar is affordable and peaceful but has fewer jobs and big-city opportunities. Students should be proactive with projects, internships, German learning, and networking. It does best at what it does.
Likes (Value for money): Value for money gets a full 5/5 because studying at Bauhaus Weimar gives you top-tier German education for virtually no tuition. You only pay a basic semester fee (Semesterbeitrag), which already covers regional transit. Renting a room in Weimar—whether in Studierendenwerk dorms or a shared flat (WG)—is wildly cheaper than in cities like Munich or Berlin. Getting full access to design labs, architecture studios, and research facilities at a fraction of typical international study costs makes the ROI unbeatable.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I gave Indian food a 2/5 simply because Weimar is a small town in Thuringia where truly authentic food is hard to find. The couple of Indian restaurants here heavily hand-adjust their spices and recipes to match local German tastes. A basic meal out runs around €10–€20, which adds up fast. You'll find standard kebab spots, Italian places, and basic cafes, but if you want proper comfort food that actually tastes like home, you're better off getting spices from an Asian market and cooking in your apartment.

Bauhaus - Uni Weimar: Great for Research, But Prepare for the Small-Town Life
Tips: Before joining Bauhaus-Uni, you need to know that learning here is heavily project-based. Professors don't just lecture you; you're expected to spend endless hours in design studios, labs, or workshops working on practical, hands-on tasks. Weimar is a small, quiet cultural city—not a bustling metropolis like Berlin—so social life mostly revolves around your classmates and studio projects.
While English gets you through international Master’s courses, learning German is pretty much required for daily life, dealing with local landlords, and integrating into the town. On the money side, tuition is free save for the €300 semester fee (which covers your Thüringen transit pass), and rent in Weimar is very affordable. Look into DAAD scholarships early if you need extra monthly stipends, but overall, it's a great spot if you thrive on creative independence.

Student life at Bauhaus University Weimar
Tips: Be open to the culture; don't stay in your own bubble. Explore different opportunities provided by the university. Join initiatives to get high chances of scholarship. Make use of Erasmus and short-term blended intensive programs. This is a small university, but the number of opportunities is insane; it's up to the students on how to grab them.
Likes (Quality of faculty): They are really open and accessible. Bauhaus has a unique style of teaching that can be only experienced here. It is project- and assignment-based learning. Only a university with 4 different faculties, especially art, architecture, civil, and media.
Dislikes (Internships): It really depends on the job market and the courses you take. My course didn't have many opportunities nearby, and often people had to move to different states to do it. We don't have mandatory internships. Many companies don't know what digital engineering is, so it's also a problem while applying for jobs.

Good international experience with a practical learning environment

The academic environment is international, and the course involves technical and practical work, so having a basic interest in programming and engineering concepts is helpful. It is also good to arrange accommodation and other formalities early.
I did not avail of any scholarship. I am currently funding my studies and living expenses through my own financial resources. I would recommend students to check the university and external scholarship opportunities early, as some applications have specific deadlines and eligibility requirements.
Likes (Value for money): Top rating for value for money simply because you get a world-renowned Bauhaus education for zero tuition fees—you only pay the basic Semesterbeitrag (around €300). That fee covers your regional transit ticket across Thuringia, which alone saves you hundreds. Plus, living costs in Weimar are way more affordable than cities like Munich or Berlin, yet you still get access to top-tier design labs, media studios, and 24/7 library resources. For the quality of hands-on project work and international atmosphere you get, it’s an incredible return on investment.
Dislikes (Internships): I gave internships a low score because Weimar is a small, historic town with almost no local industry or corporate presence. While Bauhaus-Uni has basic career counseling, you’re basically on your own when it comes to landing a Werkstudent position or internship. You have to cold-apply to firms in bigger cities like Berlin, Leipzig, or Frankfurt with very little active placement help or direct networking events from the university. I wish the faculty had stronger industry pipelines and course-specific corporate connections instead of leaving students to figure it all out independently.

Bauhaus for internationals and experiences in the Bauhaus
Tips: There was, of course, a cultural shift, especially in the course curriculum, but professors will make sure that you follow the course well. Never shy away from asking questions whenever unclear. The International Student Council is also very helpful, and try to socialize with people, especially in winter. Although I did not avail myself of any scholarships, there are possibilities. One can apply for DAAD scholarships yearly. Germany is a beautiful country, and Bauhaus has the best professors, who have been experienced in the field for more than 2 decades; the course curriculum is always designed to meet industry standards.
Likes (Value for money): It covers the Deutschlandticket, museums, and other libraries in Thuringia that can also be visited for free. As someone who often travels in Germany, having a Deutschlandticket is hassle-free and affordable for students. I have also availed myself to visit a couple of UNESCO heritage sites for free.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are no Indian grocery stores in the city; however, they are available in a nearby city, which is 30 minutes away from Weimar. But there are a couple of Indian restaurants in the city, which are pretty reliable. I mostly cook for myself, or I eat in Mensa (Mensa serves Indian dishes at times).

Strong academics, smooth transition, one tip: learn German
Tips: The courses here are well-structured, and professor support is genuinely great. I came from a naval architecture and shipbuilding background. The transition wasn't difficult, though there were differences in food, culture, and a more self-directed, research-oriented approach to education. There is no tuition fee. I worked as a Hiwi (student assistant) to cover the living expenses. German language skills also matter beyond the classroom, even in English-thought programs, especially for part-time or post-graduation jobs. I am very satisfied with my university, course, and time in Germany.

University that bring joy and love to your life
Tips: Students should know that they should focus on learning the German language. They should be confident and should be expressive. The students coming here should not panic and ask for help from anyone without hesitation because the people here are very kind and helpful. I didn't get any scholarships. I came on my own The course is very good and very demanding Overall I will recommend you all.
Likes (Public transportation): The transportation system in weimar is excellent; in every 10-15 minutes we have buses, the buses are comfortable and are time-punctual as well The transportation charges are covered under the academic semester fee of the university, which is 320 euros per semester approximately.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are many companies that are available here but there is a problem of language, like, as a student, you need to learn the German language at least at a B2 level; the job roles and salary packages vary and are very diverse But I can guarantee it's very good.

Easy going, academic, less opportunistic
Tips: The first thing is you will feel the biggest cultural shock: none will talk to you even if you cry, laugh, or whatever. But once you are comfortable and you know how things work, you will be comfortable. I am so much more satisfied with the country; it was my fault that 'I didn't learn German beforehand at least till the B2 level. I am not very satisfied with my university's honesty; the course name is also like, you have to explain to everyone what you are doing, but the content of the course is really technical and computer science, machine learning, and security-oriented.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transportation is really good here. There are several buses running with a good time difference, including trains and all. That's free because we get a Deutschland ticket from our university. Only ICE is something you can't travel with. For buses, trams, and trains anywhere in Germany, you can travel for free. It is very convenient.
Dislikes (Internships): I gave internships a low rating because the local job market around Weimar is practically dead right now, and the university makes things worse by cutting back on student assistant roles (HiWi positions), claiming they’re completely out of budget. When you ask around for help, everyone just gives you the generic 'keep applying' speech without offering any actual leads or connections. Even alumni or people from your own home country who managed to land solid roles won’t lift a finger to refer you.
You have to accept early on that you are completely on your own out here. By all means, network and be friendly with everyone you meet, but never rely on anyone to throw you a lifeline. You're way better off looking for jobs outside Weimar in the bigger German cities, so stop waiting around for a favor and just spam applications on your own.

Review of MS Molecular Life Science in FSU Jena
Tips: It was a pretty smooth transition. Yes, there are cultural differences as well as academic changes from India, but still it is adjustable. I didn't have any scholarship, but one can apply from the DAAD website. I am very satisfied with my course and university. Here the master's is a more practical-based approach, and that helps to gain very good experience, and if you have worked well during your internship and master's thesis, it helps in your job search.
Likes (Safety): The crime rate is much lower, and police patrolling is quite vigilant. Generally there are mostly immigrant students, so mostly people are cooperative, and I have never personally faced any issue while traveling, even at 12 am at night. The transportation is available in the nighttime as well with working CCTV surveillance.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The jobs are less available at the professional level in Jena because it is a comparatively smaller city with fewer companies. Jena is more of a student-based city with 2 universities and lots of students residing there. We have to apply a lot all over the country to get the job.

More than a degree, it is an experience that shaped my future.
Tips: I experienced a cultural shift. I am used to always having noise in Chennai. Moving to Germany and especially Jena was challenging at first, as the city is very quiet; apart from the center of the city, it is rare to see people outside in the street. But I got used to it eventually. I worked part-time at McDonald's (helped a lot in improving my German language skills) and earned up to 450 euro in 2019. The cost for part-time is increased now (and quite sufficient for life here), and it is also possible to get student jobs within the university and institutes; I was just not interested in that. I was very satisfied with the course and university; the university is also known for life science courses and was recognized all around Germany. I did a Ph.D. after my master's and continue to live here. I like the way my life turned out, and the lifestyle here is also good.
Likes (Value for money): There were no tuition fees, just a small contribution each semester as a semester fee (200-300 euro). For the quality of education and opportunities, I found it very worthy and valuable. The transportation was also included in the semester fees, so I did not need to spend extra for that.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There were no specific Indian shops to buy groceries; there was just one Oriental shop, which also had Indian groceries but without much selection. However, there are good online delivery options nowadays. There was 1-2 Indian restaurants; as a student, I found it expensive to eat there.

Tips: Make sure to do well research about courses and professors research field etc. Learn German before coming so that well integrated into society and people. Adapting, learning and thriving.
Tips: Before joining, students should be aware that the academic workload is quite intensive, especially in the first semester. The bureaucracy and the language barriers may also pose initial challenges, so it's better to learn German, atleast what you will need for the daily life. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the university, course and life in this country as most of the faculty are supportive, the course is also really good.
Likes (Value for money): There isn't really a tuition fee at university Jena, but you do pay a semester contribution each semester- it's basically a student service fee. It comes with a lot of perks: free transportation across Thuringia, student discounts, access to university sports and facilities, and also the deutschland ticket is way cheaper for students.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are Indian restaurants in the city, but the food quality isn't very good and the options are quite limited. It's nice to go there once in a while, though. Sometimes you can ask them to make the food more spicy- or as they call it, "like India". Most dishes are from the northern region, basically the types of food that are more familiar and popular among Germans.

FSU is a nice university with more focus on light optics.
Tips: It is kind of a bit hectic getting settled in during the first semester. You need to be prepared for accepting huge cultural differences. My allowance is 2200 euros in hand per month, available from the scholarship. I applied for the position via email to a list of professors I like. I am quite satisfied with the quality of life offered and the education being provided at an affordable tuition fee.
Likes (Safety): You can roam around the city late at night without being worried alone. I have never experienced any kind of insecure behaviour from the people around me. You can walk anywhere without being worried about your luggage being stolen if you keep it outside.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Per dish cost around 16 euros if you go to almost any restaurant nearby. I used to cook for myself, but most often had to pick up groceries every three or four days, depending on my food habits. Sometimes you have to stock up a bit, as on the weekends all the supermarkets are closed.

Jena is a small city, finding internships can sometimes be difficult.
Tips: Jena is a small city and not the harshest one, it’s very easy to navigate and settle. I did not have any scholarships because I did not know about them, but the university does provide scholarships of about 900 euros per month.
3) I’m very satisfied with the choice I made to study photonics.
Likes (Value for money): The course provides core information about basics and fundamentals of photonics. My branch was called Abbe school of photonics and Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe such big scientists and researchers have studied here long ago, so I feel it is prestigious and well value for money.
Dislikes (Internships): Jena is a small city, finding internships can sometimes be challenging since all students can not be well accommodated by Jena. In terms of guidance, you are on your own and internships are available however supervisors prefer to take someone with more experience.
