Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration - Batch of 2021
Offered by Hanken School of Economics
4.2
Generous Scholarship and Great Nordic Experience
Tips: The first few months were tough. Almost everything was different from what I was used to: the culture, the infrastructure, and the way people interact. The university made the transition much easier, though. Hanken takes care of most of the administrative work for incoming international students, and since Finland is so digitalised, nearly everything can be done online. You should still expect some cultural adjustment. My advice is to make friends across different groups and go to international events, which are a great way to build a social circle. It’s also worth taking courses at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, since that gives you access to many more resources. And be ready for the weather. Winters are harsh, and it takes a while to get used to. I received the Hanken Premium Scholarship, which covered my full tuition and included a living stipend. It’s competitive. You submit your complete academic profile along with details of your financial background. In 2019, the stipend was 666 EUR per month. That was enough to cover basic living costs, but how far it stretched depended mostly on your rent. I’d recommend looking into unfurnished student housing in Helsinki. I’m very happy with my time at Hanken School of Economics. The scholarship was generous, and I’m grateful to Hanken for giving me the chance to study there. Finland is a beautiful country, and I loved my time there. Living in the Nordics was a unique experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone thinking about it.
Likes (Public transportation): Finland has some of the best public transport infrastructure in the world. Hanken's campus is in central Helsinki, close to the Central Railway Station, and is well connected by trams, buses, the metro, and commuter trains. You can also reach Aalto University easily by metro, which would be useful if you take many courses there (I would definitely recommend that). Services are frequent and reliable even in winter, tickets can be bought through the HSL app, and students get a discount on season passes, so it kept my costs affordable with a tight budget. I think I spent only 50 EUR per month on transport.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Helsinki has very few Indian restaurants, and the quality of the food is disappointing, especially for someone who grew up in Delhi. Eating out in general is expensive for a student budget, so I did not have many opportunities to try restaurants regularly. I mostly cooked for myself and ate lunch at the university cafeterias, which offer subsidised student prices and are much more affordable than restaurants.
