MSc in Embedded Systems Engineering - Batch of 2027
4.1
Very few relevant job opportunities for engineers.
Tips: It is common to extend at least one semester here due to high workloads. If you want to complete in the given time, you cannot do extra stuff like part time job and travelling. You just need to study. The only scholarship for Indians is the Deutschland stipendum, for which you need 1.0 to 1.5 German grade.
Likes (Safety): No problems faced till now. I have travelled late at night, still I always felt safe. Maybe I am new, that is why. Need to spend more time here, then only I can tell more about this. But my friends who have been here since the last 1 year had no bad experiences related to safety.
Dislikes (Internships): There are some research institutes like Faunhofer and some startups. Apart from that, there are no big companies here. Very few relevant job opportunities for engineers. You can work remotely. Also you can work part time in restaurants and other places easily.

University of Freiburg - Embedded Systems Engineering.
Tips: The engineering courses are flexible and offer a wide spectrum of subjects from which you can choose your credits. This gives flexibility and a chance to explore various fields for students. Freiburg is a beautiful, fantastic and multi-cultural place with a majority of the population being students. I didn't avail any scholarships.
Likes (Post study jobs): We don't really need companies to offer sponsorship in Germany. Once we finish the studies, we are on a job-seeker visa and can apply for any jobs here. The Embedded Systems course offers a wide spectrum of subjects, so a wide range of job roles are offered for students who graduate. Salary packages are typically 60000 - 70000.
Dislikes (Internships): The guidance on finding internships is good. You could find internships for renewable and sustainable energy engineering fields, because of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg. But as Freiburg is not really a big industrial city, there are not many big electronics/automobile companies. So finding an internship in those fields is a bit difficult.

Living and enjoying life in Germany.
Tips: Please learn basic conversational German before arriving, although it's a university town. Respect the rules and regulations of the city and abide by them. Enrolling in some sports activities helps to make friends and break the ice. Do everything by yourself rather than depending on professors to hand you stuff, German culture works on asking rather than getting something for free.
Likes (Safety): Freiburg is a safe city with not much of a crime rate, one has to be generally careful especially when walking alone at night away from the city. There are some on ground staff post work hours to ensure safety, however, one has to be careful and attentive at all times.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The current job market is stagnant with not too many opportunities. However, there are jobs in the semiconductor and chemical sectors which can be hired. Keep connecting with people and keep looking for opportunities, including internships, which might land you a job later.

From doubts to directions - My Master's journey in Germany.
Tips: There has been significant growth. I've become more confident in my decisions, my perspective, my body language and attitude after meeting new people and adapting to the new environment. I managed my expenses through student assistant roles and part-time jobs, but one can apply for DAAD scholarships. Initially, I doubted the course I selected, but later realised that I am in the perfect spot, as it is the upcoming technology and booming field. My course on Microsystems Engineering is suitable for Electronic and Communication and Mechanical Engineering undergraduates. The course involves Semiconductor chip design and manufacturing, useful in all smart gadgets and modern automotive systems.
Likes (Public transportation): The city has several public transportation options including trams every 7 mins, connecting all parts of the city, S-Bahn intercity trains and buses
If you want affordable tickets and you don't want to travel much, it's best to buy a semester ticket. To travel throughout Germany, you can buy a Deutschland ticket or an RVF Jugend ticket for under 27years, a bit expensive but worth the money if you like travelling.
Dislikes (Part time work): A lot of non-technical jobs, such as restaurants, student canteens called after Mensa, and DHL. For technical jobs at the university - IMTEK, INATECH, Fraunhofer branches, SICK, Hahn-Schickard. You can also download apps like Jobvalley and Zenjobs for non-technical part-time jobs.

Freiburg is a nice student city.
Tips: Learn the language and basics of UG because everything here is based on it so without knowing it life will be difficult here. Also go through the curriculum once to see if the courses match your expectations or not. Talk with people on LinkedIn to get to know more about the courses and the university.
Likes (Student Life): Freiburg is a nice student city, you have a lot of student activities every week. You'll also have a lot of places which can be visited from here like Black Forest and Base Switzerland. You'll also get Indian community help from here where you can get help both professionally and personally as well.
Dislikes (Internships): There are a lot of internships available nearby where students can get practical experience. It's mostly research oriented but companies also prefer that so it's pretty helpful. The university also focuses more on AI and chips which is the next best thing.

MSc in Embedded Systems Engineering - Batch of 2024
4.1
Great college and a good city.
Tips: Students should be aware that completing a masters degree in two years is challenging; it typically takes at least three years. Scholarship opportunities in Germany are limited, but excellent students can apply for a few. Our university has a great staff and top researchers in the field.
Likes (Public transportation): Germany generally has very good and affordable public transportation. Freiburg city is well-equipped with options like trams, buses, and trains. With a monthly subscription of 58 euros, you can travel throughout Germany using regional trains, buses, and trams.
Dislikes (Internships): There is no support from the university for internships. Since they are not mandatory, they must be done during the semester break, which is usually very short or by taking a semester break. Some universities in Germany support students in getting internships by giving them subject credit.

The university is really awesome.
Tips: Basic German is a must. The university fee is around 1700 euros. I didn't have any scholarships, but I had a part-time job that was sufficient to cover my monthly expenses. The faculty is top-notch, especially if you want to excel in the field of AI.
Likes (Public transportation): Connections like S-Bahn, trams, and buses are readily available, making it easy to get around Freiburg. Public cycles are also an option for students. Monthly public transport tickets cost around 30 euros for those under 27 and 60 euros for those 27 and over.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are many mensa/mess options where the food is comparatively cheap, and they serve Indian dishes at least once a week. They offer large portions at affordable prices, so there's no real issue there. Many Turkish "done" shops in the city offer food similar in taste to Indian cuisine (spicy), costing around 10 euros. Other restaurants are quite fancy and expensive. While there are Indian restaurants, they often modify the taste to suit local preferences. For this reason, I mostly prefer to cook for myself. There are a few Indian stores in the city where you can find most masalas and other groceries.

University of Frieburg is high on value for money
Tips: It's an academically focused university that is in the heart of Freiburg city. Attendance is not compulsory so you can choose to go for whichever classes you like. Also, your grade only depends on the final exam, there are no assignments or mid-terms etc.
Likes (Value for money): No tuition fees and the state fees is pretty minimal, around 1500 euros per semester. This is also because I live in the Baden Wuttenburg state, otherwise, the tuition fees in other areas like Hamburg, Berlin, Munich etc. is even cheaper, around 200-500 euros per semester.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are very few Indian options in the city as it is pretty small. Most of the restaurants there are Turkish or fast food places that offer the same stuff. And the Indian restaurants that are there, don't taste authentic and on top of that are super expensive.
