Master of Science in Education in Health, Sport, and Exercise Science - Batch of 2025

Very friendly and great environment.
Tips: Know your course curriculum, credit requirements, grading system, and academic calendar. Understand the teaching style: lecture-based, hands-on, research-oriented. Be clear on tuition feels, housing cost, living expenses, and available scholarships or financial aid. Know the payment deadline and how to manage a student budget. Familiarise yourself with student services: academic advising, counselling, health centre, career centre, and tutoring. Learn how to access the library, labs, and online platforms like Canvas or Blackboard. Research student clubs, sports, cultural organisations, and campus events. Know the local area transport, safety, entertainment, and job opportunities. Understand on-campus vs. off-campus housing pros and cons. The quality of faculty is very high here. Faculty do a great job of delivering clear explanations, engaging lectures, good classroom management, and the ability to make complex topics understandable. They stay updated on the latest research and integrate current knowledge into teaching. They are approachable, available for questions or guidance, and genuinely interested in student success. Plus, they are good at explaining ideas, open to discussion, give constructive feedback, and listen actively.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Take part in workshops, certification, or internships to gain real-world experience. Learn soft skills: communication, teamwork, and adaptability. Take advantage of the university's resources: libraries, tutors, office hours, and career centre. Maintain regular sleep, eat nutritious food, and stay physically active. Avoid burnout, mental health is just as important as grades. And know that it's fine to seek help from the counselling centre when you need it. Make friends from diverse backgrounds. Join clubs, student groups, or sports teams to build community and leadership skills.

Satisfying and not satisfying. Public transport is easy to get used to.
Tips: First thing you should know is to decide where you want to stay. Off-campus is definitely a better choice if you have financial challenges. Given that you can afford it, on-campus housing would be better if you love to be engaged with the student community and want to know what going on around. I received a scholarship of 9000 dollars per semester but that is because I applied through Shorelight. If you apply through an agency, then they probably have some sort of contacts and you get scholarship based on that contact. However, if you apply yourself, you can even get 100 percent scholarship. But if you apply through someone else, they won't tell you this so make sure you apply yourself. Usually, you have to write an essay to get the scholarship and submit your SAT test scores. I think I am pretty satisfied with the university in terms of its quality of education. However, because Kansas is mostly farming land and it is slow paced state as compared to other states, people who are interested in IT area of study would struggle to get post graduation job. Construction companies are in good numbers here but for Software engineers etc., it will most probably be a lot harder to find a job.
Likes (Public transportation): The whole town is connected through various bus routes. Bus is the main public transportation in Lawrence. Since it's a small town, buses are easily able to cover most of the main areas, especially downtown. If you don't own a car, it would be totally fine. This is how convenient and easy it is to travel using public transportation.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Since University of Kansas is situated in a small town called Lawrence in Kansas state, you won't find many options to immigrate permanently. My chances are low because the options I know to get permanent settled here are:
1. Get married
2. Find a job on OPT and get H1b visa
3. Find a lawyer to file eb3 unskilled visa for you
Problem with first option is that I do not want to get married right now just for the sake of permanent residence. Second option is based on luck because they do a lottery for h1b visa. Third can be quite expensive.

University of Tennessee, Knoxville Review
Tips: The university is very good, but it is more famous for its PhD programs than its undergraduate programs. This is probably because the university is a close partner of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The tuition and fees are on the higher side for a public university, and most of the scholarships were available to PhD and bachelor's students in my department.
Likes (Student Life): The University of Tennessee, Knoxville has a great campus to explore, and a wide variety of events take place on campus. There are student clubs and communities for all types of interests. The events range from sporting events to Halloween and Food Festivals to International Coffee House once in 2 weeks to Diwali, Holi, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The public transportation system is not so well connected with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. There are a few bus routes that run from the campus, and while they are affordable, they are not very convenient. The university does run a few bus routes around campus for students who live nearby.

Amazing faculty. Totally worth it.
Tips: Rent's gone up almost twice in the last 4 years. So a cool tip to new students: move out to either South Knoxville or near Alcoa and come by car. You will need the car anyway so take the car first and don't spend on rent. Travel more, Knoxville is beautiful.
Likes (Quality of faculty): UT's faculty are great. I mostly know graduation students and most of them do their experiments on campus. All the high-teach cutting-edge instruments are available with the right faculty members (nearby ORNL is a plus). Some of the departments, especially the engineering ones are great.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Public transportation is worth it if you live ~4-5 miles from campus/downtown (but the rent's pretty high around that part). Anything beyond it takes forever. Also, the hill terrain makes bike computing problematic. Transportation is affordable but it costs time.

Financing intelligently is significant here.
Tips: I would like to mention one thing, which is pretty straightforward - if you are coming here as a Bachelors/Masters student without any scholarship, please make sure you have your financial plan ready for the necessary funds to cover your tuition fees + living expenses. Relying on campus jobs for living expenses is not reliable. Sure, you get some money, but it can help you cover your wants, not needs.
Likes (Student Life): There's always a lot of stuff that keeps happening on the campus. If you can manage your time effectively and prioritize what you like to do, you'll like your student life. There's the football season in the fall and other sports that happen in the Springs, Basketball being one of the most popular.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Knoxville does not have many options for Indian Food. It still developing, better options might come up in the future. For Non-Vegetarian, there are always options available. For Vegetarian, obviously not much. I prefer cooking 80% of the time, and doing meal prep. Cooking would be the best way to eat whatever you like at a minimal cost any day.

University overall is fine but depends on department to department
Tips: There is a whole cultural shift after moving here. It's totally different but in a good way. I was on scholarship but I was ready to spend it all as the living cost is high. I am fully satisfied with the university as it is one of the best in the world but being a student as well as TA workload is too much.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): Good cost of living, a nice and peaceful city. I like it here as people are really nice and helpful to each other. Big cities are also not far away and have good connectivity by road and by air. Also the weather is really nice as not too cold winters and not too hot summers.
Dislikes (Internships): Most professors don't want students to go to internships as most internships happen in the summer and professors want to spend that time in the lab. There are a lot of internship opportunities available relative to the field but getting a chance to grab those opportunities is low as your professor won't let you go for an internship.
