The University of Idaho is a publically-owned, land-grant research university. Founded in 1889 by the regional legislature, it was the sole university in the state for 71 years till 1963. The institute commenced teaching in 1892 with 40 students. Today, it is amongst the best institutions for research and a significant educational center in Idaho. The institution awards doctoral, master’s, bachelor, and specialist degrees under the accreditation from APLU. It has its sports affiliation from NCAA Division I which certifies UI's Idaho Vandals to compete in the Big Sky Conference.
Located in Moscow city, the main campus of UI dwells in the rolling Palouse hills in Idaho. Spread over an area of 1,585 acres, the university campus comprises of academic blocks, a library, parking areas, bike tracks, farms, an 18-hole golf course, and arboreta. There are 253 buildings on the campus including the Memorial Gymnasium, Student Recreation Center, Bruce M. Pitman Center and the Administration Building. The Idaho Commons, positioned in the center of the campus, houses the study area, food court, Einstein's Bagels and coffee shop, copy center, convenience store, and the credit union. The Kibbie Dome, the multi-purpose hall of the university is the venue for tennis, basketball, football, and indoor tracks.
The university library with more than 2 million holdings is the largest library in the state. There are 4 residence halls, 18 fraternities and 10 sororities in the university premises offering on-campus accommodation to the students, mainly the freshmen. There are apartments on the campus that are only available for married couples, families, graduates, law, and non-traditional learners. Other than this, UI has its branch campuses in Boise, Idaho Falls, Coeur d'Alene, and Twin Falls and extension facilities across the state of Idaho.
The university has 10 colleges, two of which are exclusively for law and graduate studies. The University offers more than 300 degrees for undergraduate and graduate students. There are 10,791 students enrolled for various programs in the university, 4 percent of which comprises of international students. Nearly 9,328 students are pursuing their degrees from the Moscow campus. The student-faculty ratio at UI is 16:1. In addition, there are many clubs in the university that enable students to indulge in extracurricular activities such as dance, drama, opera, and soccer.
The University of Idaho has a list of notable alumni that includes prominent researchers, politicians, academics, authors, scientists, athletes, artists, and journalists. Some of the alumni of the university are Kelli Johnson (NBC Sports Bay Area Anchor), Ali Abdelghany (Marine Biologist), Rebecca Zanetti (Novelist), Steven Amstrup (Famous Polar Bear Researcher), Kristin Armstrong (an Award-Winning Cyclist), Fred Taylor (Former District Court Judge in the U.S.), Mark Felt (FBI Special Agent), Rayce Bird (Special Effects and Make-Up Artist) and Brad Teare (Illustrator and Painter).
