Understand the latest immigration policy before you come here.
Tips: Do research on and apply for every available scholarship. The University of Sheffield is on a visa-sponsored, not a tourist visa. Understand the latest immigration policy before you get there. You must know the reason you are at this university. Do a lot of research on what makes you tick. If you are looking to make money for your family while you are here, don't take courses that require you to get a SC for jobs.

Sheffield - A beautiful city with supportive and inspiring university.
Tips: Before joining, you should actively search for WhatsApp groups in that city and university. You should also never hesitate to ask for help or advice in those groups. I personally feel that these groups are a good source for finding the best and most affordable accommodation. While there are good opportunities available, competition can be quite high. The University offers several on-campus jobs such as library assistants, student ambassadors, research support, and roles in cafes or administrative offices. These are well-structured, flexible and usually pay around 10 to 12 pounds per hour. However, the number of roles is limited compared to the number of interested students.
Likes (Safety): I have always felt secure both on and off campus. The university has strong campus security, with 24/7 patrolling staff, an emergency contact point, and secured access to buildings.

Limited support for freshers.
Tips: There was more of a lifestyle shift than a cultural shift for me as I moved to the UK as soon as I finished my undergrad. I started working part-time jobs to pay the bills. Due to the variety of restaurants and tiffin services available, British Indian food can be a bit bland. I prefer cooking, but there are also great local restaurants for students to explore. There is an area in Sheffield called London Road, which is known for its variety of food joints. I am satisfied with the university experience but not the course fully.
Dislikes (Internships): Due to limited guidance in finding or applying for relevant opportunities. Additionally, the internships are not directly provided by the university, and I received few responses from the companies I applied to. In my experience, the internships that I applied for were not directly relevant to the course of study.

Academically, university is excellent but personally it’s going to be extreme lonely
Tips: Anticipate well towards huge culture shocks and it's going to be very lonely so join societies. Try building a lot of connections and attending lectures. Finding part time is extremely difficult in the first year but you need to keep applying. Everything is going to be expensive.

MSc Urban and Regional Planning - Batch of 2023

Best life experience which I always wanted to have. I made good networks.
Tips: Before joining any college in the UK every student needs to know that you have to compromise with your comfort of life and work hard. Rather than going there and crying make sure you are ready for it. You have to learn time management. Manage your currency. Have a part-time job which is stable. Work on your assignments. Make your network strong.
Likes (Student Life): Considering Sheffield as a university town you will not have a campus, the whole city is your campus. You get to meet new people and there are many events organised, job fair etc. I was a part of the Indian society there. We had events organised by them.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There were few Indian-origin restaurants but mainly provided food as per UK taste. There is a restaurant named Maveli which provides good Kerala-type food. Cooking food at home would be preferable as having Indian food outside would be expensive. Best is to cook your own food as per your taste.

Academically, the university offers a good platform.
Tips: Students should be aware that while the University of Sheffield offers strong academic resources and a supportive environment, some practical aspects like course structure, lab access or career support might not always meet expectations. It’s important to actively seek out opportunities, engage with professors, and use available resources like the library and career services. Planning ahead and being proactive makes a big difference. I received a partial scholarship, it was reduced in my tuition fee. I’m satisfied. Academically, the university offers a good platform, and the UK has provided a rich learning and cultural experience. However, there are areas especially practical course components and job market support for international students that I feel could be improved.
Likes (Indian Food): Sheffield has a decent number of Indian and South Asian resting and grocery stores, which made it easier to find familiar food. From ready made meals to fresh spices and ingredients, most things are available if you know where to look. There are several Indian restaurants like Maveli and Butlers Balti House. They offer both dine in and takeaway options, with prices ranging from £10 to £20 per person depending on what you order. I prefer cooking at home most of the time, both for health reasons and to save money.
Dislikes (Value for money): I didn’t feel like my master's was worth whatever I paid. The way teaching was done or our assignments were structured, I learnt a lot along the way, but still, it wasn’t worth that much. There was only one industrial visit, and I had hoped for a more hands-on experience.

It has been a rewarding and challenging experience.
Tips: The faculty is excellent, and the course design is fun. You get all the help you need and the city is beautiful. However, it was also a little expensive. That said, there are lots of great opportunities. There’s also a scholarship available for 35,000. It’s based on your essay and your academics.

The university is good. You shoud explore the city and be part of clubs.
Tips: Before you start university, be prepared to join societies and talk to new people. It will take time to adjust, so don't expect a glorious picture in the first few days. To get the most out of your university experience, explore different parts of the UK and get a part-time job. This will help you get out of your comfort zone and experience new things.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty are amazing and really helpful. They are always approachable and keep a close eye on their students. They encourage students to talk to different people and join different societies. They also make sure that your mental health is fine at all times.
Dislikes (Value for money): It is definitely very expensive in comparison to the support from the university. The faculty is helpful but the money charged by the university does not compensate for it. It is a good university but you lead your own life. University lets people explore their own paths.

Great college experience; the transportation is affordable and accessible.
Tips: Students should budget carefully for expenses, utilise academic support, book accommodation options early, engage in societies, sports and events, engage with local customs and backgrounds, and develop time management and study skills. I have experienced high satisfaction with academies & facilities.
Likes (Safety): Bath is one of the safest cities in the UK. Being a student-friendly city public transport is quite accessible and out-of-campus accommodations are all provided with security vans. Personally, I never experienced any bad sightings in the city, but always be careful.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): I believe throughout my time at the University, I never faced issues with accessibility & approachability of the faculty, they were all really helpful. As far as teaching methodology is concerned, it's quite different from how we are taught in India and I found practical learning more useful than theoretical cramming.

Great exposure and new exciting beginnings!
Tips: Definitely a cultural shift. Become more financially independent. Better work environment and work-life balance. Good comfort of living but expensive. Great opportunities but a competitive job market. On a scale of 10, I am 8 satisfied with the university and course. As for the country itself, I would say 7 as weather, standard of living, and expenses can be overwhelming if you do not have an income.
Likes (Value for money): Great faculty with post-study placement support. The tuition fee is high generally but lesser compared to other universities offering anything similar or better. They offer opportunities for internships with companies they have ties with which is a great kickstart for our professional journey. Also provides lots of activities and programmes to engage with industry experts which opens new doors.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Less Indian shops. eg Mantra. Can explore foods from other cultures. Bath being a tourist city can be expensive at times. 1 meal can cost somewhere around 7 to 15 pounds and for a student may be least affordable on a day to day basis. I ate outside on weekends but other times cooked as the class schedule wasn't very tight. Rest can be adjusted from your place of work part-time restaurants etc.

A good sensed, liberal and a holistic university
Tips: This is an underdog university. The faculty, life and part time jobs are fun-loving in nature. People are liberal and so safe in the city. The modules are also career oriented. There is a good M.Sc. careers department which helps the students in enhancing their employability opportunities.

University of Bath - An Amazing Place to Study!
Tips: Be prepared to work on yourselves as an individual. University in general is quite different from school, there is no one that can improve your performance apart from yourself. The resources at Bath are endless, from fantastic faculty, employment help, award-winning societies and so much more. Use all of the resources available to you! It will pay off. Faculty are on stand-by to help students with literally whatever they need, students just need to make themselves open to learning and willing to work on themselves.
Likes (Safety): Bath is an incredibly safe city and the university is even safer still. Security is on call 24/7 and responds within minutes. There is an app (SafeZone) that has easy accessibility to security with just a press of a button. Security even extends off-campus and has picked up students from the city center when they are unable to travel on their own.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Unibus between the city center and the university isn't the best. The buses are often late, fully cramped and there are strikes often. It isn't too much of a hassle but often is a bit annoying, especially for students living off-campus and for travel during off-term times.
