University of Siegen Review
Tips: If you're heading to the University of Siegen for this track, you need to know exactly what you're signing up for. The curriculum leans incredibly hard into theoretical physics. You are going to learn intense topics like electromagnetic field theory, lightwave technology, and semiconductor physics. While they do throw in some analog, digital, and semiconductor design courses with practical assignments, the bulk of your sanity will be spent on heavy, abstract theory before you finish up with your Master’s project and thesis. You do get to pick five electives to tailor things a bit, but don't expect a hands-on, industry-style coding boot camp—this is old-school German academic rigor. The exam system here is a massive culture shock if you're coming from the Indian education system. Everything is strictly offline, usually a tight two-hour grind for 100 marks. If you're used to writing long, fluff-filled abstract answers to claw back partial credit, forget it. The professors here want short, mathematically perfect answers. To make it worse, the passing bar is brutal—usually around 50% to 60%, which is way higher than what we are used to back home. On the financial side, Siegen is actually a blessing. It’s way cheaper than living in a mega-city like Munich or Frankfurt. You can easily survive on around 600 Euros a month if you aren't splurging, especially since rent for a student spot runs pretty low, around 250 to 300 Euros. The catch is the local job market. Because Siegen is a smaller hill town, finding a typical part-time retail or warehouse gig can be tough. Your best bet is to hustle right on campus. Don't be shy—email or directly approach professors to ask for HiWi (student research assistant) positions. They constantly need help with administrative or lab tasks, and it's by far the best way to earn money while keeping your focus on your studies.

M.Sc. International Master's Programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology - Batch of 2026
4.2
University of Siegen (DE)
Tips: If you're eyeing Siegen, the first thing you need to accept is that you cannot hide from the German language forever. Even if your master's program is entirely in English, navigating daily life, dealing with local landlords, and landing a decent job afterward requires you to actively pick up the local tongue. Academically, the technical depth here is intense; the courses don't just skim the surface, so you need a genuine appetite for heavy theory and independent research. The biggest financial perk is that there are absolutely zero tuition fees. Instead, you just pay a basic semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), which is a bare-minimum fee that actually covers your administrative costs and hooks you up with a semester transit ticket for the entire state. Finally, if your goal is to bridge the gap between R&D and industry, Siegen is actually a solid launchpad. The university has tight connections with local medium-sized engineering and manufacturing firms across the NRW region, meaning there's a steady stream of thesis projects and research assistant roles if you’re willing to network.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): It depends on your course. In my case (Master's in Nanotechnology), there were not many companies willing to sponsor the visa, but still there are chances. Usually you can expect around 50k-55k euros after finishing your master's, but the important factor is language skills (German) can often get you a higher salary.

MS in Computer Science - Batch of 2028
4.4
Good university with good research
Tips: Look, the biggest trap at Siegen—especially if you're doing a tough tech degree like Computer Science, AI, or Engineering—is letting your part-time job completely hijack your schedule. A lot of international students arrive, freak out about bills, and immediately start grinding long hours at random warehouse or delivery gigs. But the German academic system will absolutely destroy you if you try to wing it. If you start skipping lectures or skipping out on the weekly problem sets (Übungsblätter), you are going to get completely obliterated when exam phase rolls around. The courses here are heavily theoretical and require serious independent prep. You need to treat your studies like a full-time job and keep the side hustle strictly on the side. Make use of the Fachschaft (student student council) for old exam scripts, and actually show up to the tutorials to ask questions when you get stuck. Siegen is a quiet, hilly student town, so there aren't massive distractions anyway. Use that to your advantage, manage your hours strictly from day one, and prioritize passing your modules over making a few extra euros. Failing an exam and having to retake a whole semester costs way more in the long run.

One of the underrated universities
Tips: The number one thing you need to understand before coming to Siegen is that everything relies on your own hustle. The German system is huge on self-study, so if you're expecting professors to chase you down or hand you passing grades, you’re in for a shock. You have to be proactive, study hard on your own, and actually make an effort to connect with professors if you want to land research opportunities or hear about working student jobs. Getting a Werkstudent role or a research assistant position completely depends on you reaching out and showing you're capable. Money-wise, the uni has this awesome scholarship deal where you can basically get half your semester fees back. Honestly, it's a total lifesaver for making your cash stretch. As for the actual classes, I'm really glad I chose this course—the structure is solid. Siegen itself is a pretty quiet, hilly student town, so it's a bit of a trek to get around, but if you're independent and don't mind putting in the work, you'll honestly love it here.

Master of Education (Lehramt an Berufkollegs) in Mechanical Engineering - Batch of 2026
4.5
Excellent university for Internation student who already knows German language.
Tips: Learn German at least B1-B2. Because it's a small German city and usually very few people speak English. No part-time jobs if you don't know German. University is free of cost. Needs to pay around 300 euro per semester, but it includes a semester ticket. You can travel throughout Germany with that ticket (not on ICE (Intercity Express)).
Likes (Permanent Immigration): If you get a full-time job and salary around 50k euro per year, you can get permanent residency after 21 months. It's best for settlement, but taxes are too high. If you are single and not having any children, you have to give almost half of your salary to the government. This needs to be considered while looking for permanent settlement.
Dislikes (Public transportation): No public transportation after 12 am. There are no Strassenbahn, U-bahn, S-bahn, or ICE (like in Munich or Frankfurt) at Siegen railway station; the only option is the regional express. Two big stations are nearby Frankfurt, 2 hours from Siegen; all trains and flights are possible from there. and Cologne is 1.5 hours from Siegen. Also, all trains and airports are there.

Less Stress Than I Expected, More Learning Than I Imagined
Tips: Moving out here to Siegen was definitely a massive shock to the system at first. Dealing with the language barrier and trying to navigate the absolute nightmare that is German bureaucracy took some serious getting used to. Culturally, people here are intensely private, hyper-punctual, and very independent, which was a total 180 from what I grew up with back home. It takes a few months to finally find your feet. Thankfully, the university itself is super welcoming, and honestly, hanging out and trauma-bonding with other international students is what makes the whole transition so much easier. On the financial side, no, I didn't get any scholarships during my time here—I had to fund the whole thing myself. But looking back at everything, I'm still incredibly satisfied with how it all turned out both for my personal growth and the academics.
Likes (Safety): I gave safety a high rating because, honestly, living and studying in Siegen feels incredibly secure. Apart from the standard campus security, Germany as a whole is just a very safe place to navigate. I’ve never felt weird using public transport here, even when I'm catching a late-night bus or train back to my flat. The university sets you up with all the necessary emergency contacts and counseling info from day one, and the campus infrastructure is always kept in solid shape. The only real trade-off—and why it’s not a flawless paradise—is that Siegen is pretty small. If you're looking for a wild nightlife scene or massive entertainment options, you're going to have to hop on a train to Cologne or Frankfurt because things get quiet here. Plus, the winter weather can get super gloomy, cold, and rainy, which takes some serious getting used to if you aren't prepared for it. But in terms of pure peace of mind and personal safety, it’s a massive win.
Dislikes (Part time work): 1) Getting a part-time job is hard because most of the jobs require the German language. However, you can still find a part-time job on an English basis. But communication during the work requires basic German. Therefore, it's quite hard to get part-time jobs. 2) Studying while doing jobs is kind of hard, but with proper time management, you can do it. Overall, people in Germany believe in work-life balance. So it works; it doesn't affect the study. 3) average pay, between 1000 and 1300 euros.

Great Experience and it was really once in a lifetime opportunity
Tips: If you're coming to the University of Siegen, you need to know that breaking into the local German culture can take some serious time—it definitely did for me—but you absolutely have to throw yourself into it if you want to experience a completely different side of life. Overall, I’ve been really happy with my time here because the German uni system gives you a massive amount of flexibility to map out your own studies, pick up part-time work, and figure out your career at your own pace. I didn't land any scholarships, so I had to hustle hard and juggle a few different minijobs just to keep cash flowing and cover my monthly expenses. The silver lining was that grinding through all those part-time gigs gave me a ton of practical work experience, which honestly made a world of difference and helped me land a proper full-time job right after graduating.

Honest Review of Uni Siegen
Tips: German language C1 is required for getting jobs. B1 is not enough. IT jobs are at high risk. The university is very good. Courses are amazing. Professors are highly experienced. The campus is spread across the town. Siegen is a hill city. Mensa food is fine. There are a lot of activities happening on campus.
Likes (Safety): People in Siegen are good. A lot of the South Indian community is there. It is very safe at night as well. There are a lot of elderly people and students everywhere. There are a lot of international people all around Siegen. I never had a bad experience regarding safety.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There are barely any full-time job openings in Germany. If you don't speak fluent German, you won't be entertained. But if I had a chance to settle in Germany, I would. Language is a must in Germany. The companies reply very late, and the Rathaus is also very slow. Everything happens on paper only.

One can take admission without expectations
Tips: This college has a good name in field of automation and robotics. If one is interested in any of these fields they should definitely go for it. Since, it is a public university, it is manageable financially and I have received a scholarship here. As of now, I am somewhat satisfied.
Likes (Value for money): I have scholarship, I don't have to pay any fees. It is a public college and hence I don't pay any fees. In college sometimes you might feel lectures are a bit boring but laboratories are a good learning. There are so many benefits of being a college student.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The public transportation system is not good. It is not as reliable as it should be. While there are some buses and train lines that connect Siegen with other cities as well but they are often late or cancelled. There will always be a limitation of public transportation.

Academically Strong University with a Beautiful Campus and Affordable Study at a Public University
Tips: Before joining, students should be clear about why they are coming. The university courses are very good, the campus is beautiful, and you will make many good connections. There will definitely be a cultural shift, but it is part of the process. Since it is a public university, the semester contribution is very affordable. If you are genuinely interested in the course you have chosen, you don't need to worry much about other things. A few basic tips will still help: learn basic German early, since it makes daily life and part-time job hunting much easier, and arrange your accommodation well in advance, because housing in a small town can fill up quickly, and bring warm clothes if you are joining in the winter semester, as winters in Ilmenau can be cold.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): Upon completion of your studies and after finding a job, you may apply for a work visa or an EU Blue Card that will provide a very clear pathway to allow you to live and work in Germany. Within several years of having worked in qualifying jobs, you will then be able to apply for permanent residency. You may also qualify for citizenship in the future. There are, however, certain requirements to consider.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Ilmenau is a small town, so the campus is well connected, and most places are within walking distance. Buses run until late in the evening, and the Deutschlandticket is included in the semester contribution, which makes it very affordable. However, service is limited compared to bigger cities: trains leave only twice an hour if you want to go out of the city, and bus frequency drops at night. That is why I rated it an average rather than higher.

My 2 cents for aspiring students looking to study in Thuringen
Tips: TU Ilmenau gives you a better education and experience than many universities. The student body is very diverse, there's a lot of events that take place throughout the academic year - festivals, music events like raves, sports facilities, nature activities like hiking, swimming, etc. I'd request all aspiring students to read the news and understand things outside of academics as well. Focus on making international friends, focus on integration, don't stick to people form tour community back home, be empathetic, develop emotional intelligence, don't discriminate, learn your rights.
Likes (Student Life): I had mang international and german friends, I was part of kolllectives and always had some activity to do. The community was great in Ilmenau. I had a great time in Ilmenau because of my multicultural friend group(s). I knew a lot of people in university, so getting help or assistance was easy. Making spontaneous plans was easy, it's a small town, so people assume there's not much you can do, but there's a lot to see. I went hiking, played basketball, football, volleyball, swimming, etc. There are also corporate events that take place now and then. There are student organisations like Stura, we4you, MFK, and student clubs that you can be part of. I'm very thankful for the community.
Dislikes (Safety): There have been attacks on students and other occurrences during my time. There are news articles as well. Additionally, Ilmenau has a rather right-wing populace who have an anti immigration stance. Racism and xenophobia are common occurrences in the town.

TU Ilmenau, Germany, Msc Communications and Signal Processing
Tips: It's a small and beautiful town, but if you want big-city hustle, don't come here. If you don't want to learn German and want to work in Germany, it's a dream that might not come true. Because it's a small town, you have to speak German for day-to-day things. The cost is very low, but not too much to do in the town, as the town is very small with just ~28k population, and out of that, 4K are students, and the rest are old people. All the fun is inside the campus, there is not much outside.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty at the university is very good and interactive. Professors and supervisors are humble and offer opportunities if one has potential. DON'T PUT BARRIERS IF NECESSARY INFO IS PROVIDED IN A FEW LINES, THEN THAT'S IT. DON'T PUT BARRIERS IF NECESSARY INFO IS PROVIDED.
Dislikes (Internships): The course I studied has no mandatory internship. Germany has a higher rate of internships offered to students in courses that have mandatory internships. This is not based on the university but on the course and country. DON'T PUT BARRIERS, IF NECESSARY INFORMATION IS PROVIDED IN A FEW LINES, THEN THAT'S IT.

TU Ilmenau - Affordable and with a Major Desi Community.
Tips: Transition is easy, as there is a major sub-continent's 'desi' community at the college. You won't face a major cultural shift and would find a nearby Indian shop carrying most spices and Indian stuff as well. As for scholarships, the college offers a 500u20ac semester grant. Since there is no education fee, that grant covers a student's major expenses. The university is nice, and the course is really tough, so be prepared to fail and to work hard to succeed. You can study at your own pace, whatever subjects you like, but be sure to target at least 20 credits a semester. Getting stuck into work or part-time could easily lead to failing the course and losing your student visa unless you find another course/university to join. I personally covered most of my major coursework before looking and starting at my current Werkstudent position. Overall, college is nice, really affordable and a course that does help a lot. But be prepared to look for work, and the time it would take to get a job in the current economy. One major, and very important thing, please learn the German Language to at least conversational B2 before coming to Germany. You can manage in English, but you will need German to actually be able to live.
Likes (Safety): Quite a small town, and extremely safe. You'll be able to move around places, and people are more than welcoming, as most know that it's a major University area. You might face issues with the language barrier if you don't know at least B2 conversational German. So try to ensure you have that at least.
Dislikes (Student Life): Decent college life, but college is in a small town, rather, it's a college town with nearly half the population being students. There are no movie theatres, malls, clubs or any places for recreational activities. You'll most likely be travelling to other places for fun. Outdoor stuff would be fine, like hiking, but college events are not something to write home about. Only the college fest in June is the best part of the year.

Nice small town university
Tips: It's a small university town. A lot fewer people than the big city university has. It is good; courses are challenging compared to India's, and you have to work hard. Tuition fees are lower, and you have the Deutschland ticket, so you can travel in public transport for free in all of Germany. Plus, small towns have less expensive accommodation; it is cheap, with lots of Indian students and diverse students. Lots of activities to do. Culture is really good.

Dislikes (Part time work): It's a very small town, so part-time jobs are fewer. Plus, you need basic German language knowledge to get a part-time job. My 4.6-Year Life at TU Ilmenau.
Tips: German language basics greatly help. Self-time management is very important. Getting and processing information in an orderly and active way is most important. Although there are various international organizations to help students, one should always take the initiative to get self-info.
Likes (Value for money): TU Ilmenau is a public university that offers studies almost free of charge. There is only a small amount of semester contribution needed, which also gives almost as much return as public transport, library usage, and various study-related software usage. Again, the city also provides cheap living costs, compared to big cities.
Dislikes (Part time work): Ilmenau is a small city. It is also a university city, where a large part of the population is students. So, it is hard to get a part-time job. Students need to go to nearby cities to get a job. There are options such as labor works, but they affect study a lot.

Likes (Permanent Immigration): After graduation from a German university, the pathway is clear for international students who want to live here. You will get up to 18 months on a job seeker visa, and then after landing a job and crossing a certain threshold in salary, you are eligible for a blue card, and then you can apply for PR after a few months.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I rated it 4/5 because I believe Germany has very good opportunities for international students, and yes, language plays a very important factor. Learning German makes things easy. Many people get full-time jobs after graduation, but effort is needed in every field, as the market is very competitive.

A good place to study, learn and grow.
Tips: I have transitioned after coming here; the way I was back in India is completely different from the version of me. I have actually experienced a lot of cultural differences between India and Germany. No, I did not have any scholarships; normally if you have a stellar profile, you will land a scholarship easily. I am very much satisfied with TU Ilmenau.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The academic staff here are all highly knowledgeable, and I find them extremely helpful regarding the explanation of topics, and also they are extremely friendly and humble. If a student has any doubt, they can contact the professor during academic hours or take an appointment to resolve their doubts.
Dislikes (Part time work): I rated part-time work low because Ilmenau is a tiny university town, so local job options are extremely limited compared to bigger cities. Unless you get lucky with a HiWi research position on campus, finding an off-campus student job without fluent German is nearly impossible. Pay is fine when you do land something, but expect months of waiting and heavy competition for the few open spots in town.

Nice university international friendly.
Tips: It's a nice university with many options for degrees. It has a very international crowd, especially Asian. But it is very small; there is not much to do here, and getting jobs (part-time, full-time) is difficult. If students want to come to study, then it's a nice place, but if they are thinking the learnings would be like Canada and Australia, then it's not the right place to come.
Likes (Safety): Ilmenau is a very safe and peaceful town, unlike big cities such as Berlin. Because it's a small town with an international crowd, it's quite safe. This town is not very crowded, and mostly old people live in East Germany, so it's part of that. And also the town is quite pretty.
Dislikes (Part time work): Because of many factors. To get a part-time job, you need German, and it is not always available. As the location is a town and a big city, jobs are quite difficult to find. If someone wants to come just for study, then it's good. But many students end up taking loans, which are difficult to pay back while living here.

TU Ilmenau-One of the Best german University
Tips: Like there are many cultural differences that are present in Germany, and you will get acclimatized to them once you start living here. I didn't get any external scholarship. I am satisfied with my university and data science course and Germany. This is what I will say.
Likes (Student Life): Apart from all other colleges I have known from my friends living in Germany, TU Ilmenau is a vibrant place where there are many clubs and societies that can help you attain knowledge beyond classwork. There are many clubs in filmmaking, arts, and vehicle racing.
Dislikes (Part time work): Like, there are very limited part-time opportunities in Ilmenau, and it is hard to land a role if you don't speak German. It is very difficult to manage part-time while studying parallelly because the examination structure here is different in comparison to India.
