The University of Tartu has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Since 1918, this university has been an Estonian-language institution. When German-occupied Estonia during 1941-44, it was renamed as Ostland-Universität. Later, during the Soviet occupation, some courses were taught in Russian along with numerous Russian curricula. This university recovered to its normal state in 1992 after Estonia regained its independence in 1991.
This university has four faculties—arts and humanities, social sciences, medicine, science, and technology. It also has research institutions that specialize in fields such as clinical medicine, chemistry, environment and ecology, geosciences, plant and animal science, social sciences, molecular biology and genetics, biology and biochemistry, neuroscience and behavior, psychiatry and psychology. Moreover, this university also has 154 business partners and is also considered to be one of the biggest development partners for the private as well as public sector across the Baltic countries.
Within the premises, this university has museums, gardens and sports facilities. In total, there are around 150 buildings in and around the university campus. In regards to the studies offered by this university, a majority portion of the curricula is taught in Estonian. There are also many programs which are taught in English. 35 percent of this university's study courses are provided in half-online or full-online format. These online courses are delivered through Moodle, video lectures, webinars, e-portfolios, and massive open online courses. It offers 56 bachelor's courses in which three courses- Business administration, medicine, science, and technology are taught in English. This university also offers 72 master's level study courses, in which 24 international master's programs are offered in English. These English master's courses are offered in different fields of study such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Technology. This university also offers 120 doctoral courses in which 35 Ph.D. programs are offered in English.
As per the reports of the university, the university alumni includes 99 per cent of the Estonian doctors, dentists and pharmacists, 40 per cent of the members of the parliament, 60 per cent of the ministers in the government, 87 per cent of the Estonian Bar Association, 100 per cent judges and 95 per cent of the prosecutors. This university also takes part in student exchange programs such as the Erasmus program, LERU-CE7, the European University Association EUA, Coimbra Group, The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities and the Utrecht Network. This university works in co-operation with 800 universities and has signed bilateral co-operation agreements with about 70 universities.
