- Applicant must have finished a BSc study program of at least 3 years (in some countries outside Europe 4 years) with an equivalent of 180 credit points according to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). If you apply from outside Europe, your BSc study program will generally be considered as equal, but will be evaluated for equivalence in case of doubt according to the recommendations of ANABIN.
- An emphasis/specialization/major in some aspect of the Life Sciences with a strong foundation in the basic (in contrast to applied) sciences is expected.
- A bachelor's degree e.g. in biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, pharmacy, bioinformatics, biotechnology, can be a sufficient basis

The prospective students have finished their BSc (or are close to completion) and
- have an excellent theoretical knowledge
- have substantial experimental research experience, most lilely in the form of an experimental BSc thesis
- want to enter a doctoral thesis research project as quickly as possible without omitting the MSc degree
- are willing and able to take a high work load
- want to study in a highly international class of peers with English as the teaching language
- are keen on working in a highly interdisciplinary and diverse environment
- A prior education and training in a medical profession is not considered sufficient (exceptions may apply if substantial practical research experience in basic science can be demonstrated).

For those who have not yet finished their BSc at the time of application, the transcripts of records must prove completion of 5/6 of a regular study program (e.g. 150 of 180 ECTS credit points in European study programs).
Marks derived from all kinds of different scales used outside Germany will be recalculated to the German scale according to the following formula:
x = 1 + 3 (Nmax - Na / Nmax - Nmin)
with Nmax= best possible mark (or GPA or percentage or whatever shows up in your transcripts and diplomas) on your local scale, Na = applicant's actual average mark; Nmin= lowest mark on your local scale which would still allow you to successfully complete (=pass) your study program.
According to the formula above, "x" has to be 2.4 or better (= lower than 2.4).

- Substantial experimental (laboratory) research experience (real research projects, not just learning/applying methods or performing technical support activities), most likely in the form of an experimental bachelor's thesis project, is required.
- Knowledge of German not required for anything related to studying. Nevertheless, we expect that you study some German and reach A1 level (most basic level) by the end of the second semester. The university offers complimentary courses for our students.
- If applicants pass the document screen, they will be invited to participate in a written exam, which will be conducted online in April. For this online exam a computer, stable internet and a webcam are needed. If applicant averages 2,0 or better in this exam (on a scale from 1-4), they will be invited for interview.

Applicants selected for interview will be interviewed by video conference according to procedures established at the Graduate School of Life Sciences.
The interview always is in front of the admission board and consists of
- a presentation (10 min) by the candidate about a recent research project of their own (e.g. Bachelor thesis work)
- a discussion about the presentation and a general interview (10 min each)
The interview will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Presentation: English / rhetoric standard, introduction, results (presentation, didactics, design), quality of experiments (controls, standards, statistics), critical reflection (interpretation), summary, 10 min limit matched
- Discussion: Eagerness to discuss, ability to comprehend questions, meaningful answers, ability to put own work in scientific context, ability to respond to critical questions
- General Interview: Reflection of scientific career plans, knowledge of current developments in the life sciences, general knowledge, communicative behavior
