Learn how to get admission to the top business schools in France as an Indian student. Check admission requirements, eligibility, GMAT/GRE/CAT, English tests, fees, the application process, Campus France, student visa requirements, and important tips for building a strong application.

Getting admission to the top business schools in France requires careful course selection, academic preparation, management test scores, English proficiency, and strong application and interview preparation. Indian students also need to complete the Campus France process and meet France's student visa requirements after receiving admission.

Admission to Top Business Schools in France

France is home to several globally recognised business schools, including INSEAD, HEC Paris, ESSEC Business School, ESCP Business School, Emlyon Business School and EDHEC Business School. However, admission to these schools is programme-specific. An MBA applicant and a Master in Management (MiM) applicant may have very different eligibility requirements.

For Indian students, the admission process to top business schools in France can also involve GMAT/GRE or another management test, English-language proof, academic documents, essays, recommendations and an interview. After admission, students residing in India must also complete the applicable Études en France procedure and student visa formalities.

Top Business Schools in France as per QS Ranking

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026: Business & Management Studies can be used as one reference point when comparing business schools in France. QS ranks INSEAD at No. 4 globally for the subject. HEC Paris is ranked at 12 for Business & Management Studies. Check the ranking of top Business Schools in France below.

QS rankings should be treated as one comparison factor rather than an admission criterion. QS's Business & Management Studies ranking covers the broader subject area, while individual schools may have separate rankings for their MBA, Master in Management, Finance, Business Analytics and other programmes. For example, ESCP's QS subject ranking is separate from its programme-specific rankings.

Which Programme Should Indian Students Choose: MBA, MiM or MSc?

The first step in France business school admission is choosing the correct degree. A common mistake is to use the admission requirements of an MBA when applying for a specialised master's degree.

Programme

Typical applicant profile

Common admission components

MBA

Professionals with significant work experience

Degree, GMAT/GRE, English proof, CV, essays, recommendations and interview

Master in Management (MiM)

Graduates and students with limited professional experience

Bachelor's degree, management test, English proof, academic record, CV and interview

MSc

Graduates targeting a specialised business field

Academic qualification, English proof and programme-specific test/application requirements

Requirements vary by school and programme. HEC Paris, for example, describes its Master in Management as a programme for high-potential students with little or no professional experience, while its MBA admissions requirements are designed around candidates with professional experience.

Can Indian Students Apply to French Business Schools Without Work Experience?

Yes, depending on the programme. Work experience is not a universal requirement for a master's degree in France. HEC Paris's Master in Management is open to applicants with at least a three-year bachelor's degree and little or no professional experience. HEC Lyon's Master in Management also accepts students holding an eligible bachelor's degree from outside France.

The situation is different for MBA programmes. HEC Paris strongly encourages at least two years of professional experience for MBA applicants and states that the average work experience of its Class of 2025 was six years. INSEAD's MBA selection criteria also focus on leadership potential, academic capacity, international motivation and the ability to contribute to the class.

What Should Indian Students Check Before Choosing a French Business School?

Do not choose a school only because it appears high in a ranking. Compare the exact programme you want to study. The following factors should be checked before submitting an application:

  • Programme name and degree awarded
  • Programme duration
  • Eligibility based on your bachelor's degree
  • Required management test
  • English-language requirement
  • Work-experience requirement
  • Tuition fee
  • Scholarship availability
  • Application deadlines
  • Campus location
  • Internship or apprenticeship options
  • Career services and employer connections
  • Whether the programme is taught fully or partly in English
  • Campus France/Etudes en France requirements for Indian applicants

This programme-level comparison is particularly important because two schools can have very different requirements even if both appear in the list of top business schools in France.

Are French Business School Programmes Taught in English?

Several French business schools offer English-taught master's programmes. For example, emlyon's Master in Management is delivered in English and states that French is not essential for admission to the programme. However, students should still check the language of instruction for the specific course rather than assuming that every programme is taught in English.

Learning basic French can still be useful for daily life, internships and communication outside the classroom. English may be sufficient for an English-taught programme, but language requirements for admission and language needs for living in France are two different issues.

What Are the Admission Requirements for Business Schools in France?

The exact admission requirements in France depend on the business school and programme. However, Indian applicants to leading French business schools should generally prepare an academic record, a recognised bachelor's degree where required, a CV, motivation statement or essays, management test scores where required, English-language proof where required, recommendation letters and an interview or video assessment.

For example, ESSEC's Master in Management application requires a management test and an English test. ESSEC accepts GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE and CAT for Indian applicants. It accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum score of 6.5 and TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 95, subject to its stated conditions.

1. Academic Qualification

Your academic qualification is one of the first things a business school checks. Requirements differ by programme. HEC Paris's Master in Management requires at least a three-year bachelor's degree, while emlyon's Master in Management accepts a degree from a nationally accredited higher education institution outside France and requires at least three years of higher education study outside France.

Indian applicants should therefore keep their bachelor's degree certificate, semester/year-wise marksheets and other academic records ready. If a school asks for an official transcript, submit the format specified by the institution.

2. GMAT, GRE or Other Management Tests

A management test is an important part of applications to several leading French business schools. However, there is no single test requirement for every business school in France.

ESSEC's Master in Management accepts GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE and CAT for Indian applicants. emlyon accepts GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE and CAT for Indian students, and also offers its own online management test for its international MiM admissions. EDHEC requires a strong GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE or CAT score for its Master in Management, with CAT specifically available for Indian students.

ESCP's Master in Management accepts GMAT, GRE, CAT or TAGE-MAGE. Its published requirements state that there is no minimum management-test score for the relevant admissions route, although applicants still need to meet the school's overall selection requirements.

3. Does a High GMAT Score Guarantee Admission?

No. A management test score is only one part of the application at schools that require it. INSEAD states that it has no minimum GMAT score and assesses candidates across several criteria. Its admissions criteria include academic capacity, international motivation, leadership potential and the ability to contribute to the class.

HEC Paris also states that it evaluates MBA applications holistically and does not have a minimum score requirement for its assessments, although the current MBA class has an average GMAT score of 635.

This means Indian applicants should not build their entire application around one test score. Academic performance, professional experience where relevant, career goals, essays, recommendations and interview performance can also matter.

4. English Language Requirements

English proficiency is commonly required for English-taught business programmes, but the exact test and score vary by school. HEC Paris's MBA requirements list IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge English, PTE and Duolingo among accepted tests, with an IELTS minimum of 7.0 and at least 6.5 in each component for applicants who need to submit an English test.

For ESSEC's Master in Management, the published minimum is IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 95, among the listed accepted tests. Applicants who have completed at least three years of higher education entirely in English may qualify for an English-test exemption under the school's stated conditions.

emlyon similarly provides an English-test exemption for certain applicants who completed a degree fully taught in English or spent three academic years in an English-taught programme during the specified period.

5. CV or Resume

Your CV should present your academic and professional profile clearly. Include education, work experience, internships, leadership roles, projects, achievements, certifications and relevant extracurricular activities.

Do not add unrelated information only to make the CV longer. The strongest version connects your previous experience with the programme and your future career plan.

6. Statement of Purpose, Motivation Letter and Essays

Your motivation statement should answer specific questions rather than repeat your CV. Explain why you want to study the programme, why the particular business school fits your goals, what you have done so far to prepare for the programme and how the degree fits into your career plan.

This becomes especially important if you are changing your career direction. In that case, explain the transferable skills from your previous education or employment and why the new programme is a logical next step.

7. Letters of Recommendation

Recommendation letters should ideally come from people who know your academic or professional work well. Depending on the programme, these can include professors, managers or professional supervisors.

INSEAD requires two recommendations for its MBA application and recommends professional referees who have evaluated the candidate's performance.

8. Interview

Many leading business schools use an interview or video assessment as part of selection. Prepare to explain your academic background, work experience, career goals, reasons for choosing France, reasons for selecting the particular school and what you expect to contribute to the class.

INSEAD's MBA application includes a video and written assessment after submission. emlyon uses digital tests that include cognitive exercises, motivation questions and professional role-play.

Can Indian Students Apply Without GMAT for a Master's in France?

It depends on the specific school and programme. It is not accurate to say that every French business school requires GMAT, and it is also not accurate to say that GMAT is never required.

For example, ESSEC's Master in Management accepts several management tests, including CAT for Indian applicants. ESSEC accepts GMAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE, or CAT and also provides an online management test for its international MiM admission. ESCP also accepts GMAT, GRE, CAT, and TAGE-MAGE for its Master in Management.

Therefore, an Indian student without GMAT should first create a list of programmes that accept an alternative test or provide another admissions route. The correct approach is to check the current official admission page for every programme before deciding that a school is unavailable.

When Should Indian Students Start Applying to French Business Schools?

Start at least several months before the intended intake. A competitive application can require time for test preparation, English testing, document collection, essay writing, recommendation letters and interviews.

For example, HEC Paris's 2027 Master in Management direct-admission calendar includes application deadlines from October 2026 through April 2027. ESSEC's 2027 MiM calendar lists Round 1 on October 7, 2026, Round 2 on November 26, 2026 and Round 3 on February 17, 2027.

Applicants should always check the current programme page because deadlines can differ by programme, nationality, application route and intake.

How Does the France Business School Application Process Work for Indian Students?

For an Indian student, getting an admission offer from a business school is only one part of the process. India is one of the countries covered by France's Etudes en France (EEF) procedure. Campus France states that students residing in countries covered by the procedure must follow the relevant process for master's-level studies through to the student visa stage.

Step 1: Shortlist the Programme

Start by selecting the degree, specialisation, intake and campus. Do not shortlist a school only from a general ranking. Check the programme's curriculum, eligibility, test requirements, language, tuition fee, deadlines and career options.

Step 2: Check the Official Admission Requirements

Visit the official programme page of every shortlisted school. Create a checklist of academic qualification, management test, English test, CV, essays, recommendations, interview and application fee.

Step 3: Prepare GMAT/GRE/CAT or Another Accepted Test

Take the management test required or accepted by your chosen programmes. Indian applicants should pay particular attention to schools that accept CAT as an alternative because several leading schools specifically list CAT for Indian candidates.

Step 4: Prepare English-Language Proof

Check whether you need IELTS, TOEFL or another approved English test. Do not assume that an English-medium bachelor's degree automatically provides an exemption. The rules are school-specific.

Step 5: Submit the Business School Application

Upload the required documents, complete essays or motivation questions and submit the application before the deadline. Some schools use several admission rounds, so applying earlier can give you access to an earlier evaluation round.

Step 6: Attend the Interview or Complete the Video Assessment

If shortlisted, prepare for the interview. Be ready to explain your career goals, academic background, professional experience, reasons for choosing France and reasons for selecting that particular programme.

Step 7: Receive the Admission Decision

Once you receive an offer, carefully check the conditions attached to it, the acceptance deadline, tuition payment requirements and documents needed for enrolment.

Step 8: Complete the Campus France Process

Campus France India explains that Indian applicants create an account on the Etudes en France platform and provide personal information, academic records, language skills, CV and SOP/motivation information. The process is conducted online and allows applicants to communicate with Campus France.

Campus France states that for master's-level applications, students residing in a country covered by Etudes en France should follow the procedure through to obtaining a student visa.

What Documents Are Required for France Business School Admission?

The exact document list varies by institution. Indian students should normally be prepared to provide documents such as:

  • Passport
  • Bachelor's degree certificate
  • Academic transcripts/marksheets
  • CV or resume
  • Statement of purpose or motivation letter
  • GMAT/GRE/CAT/TAGE-MAGE or other accepted management test score
  • IELTS/TOEFL or other accepted English test score, where required
  • Letters of recommendation, where required
  • Work-experience documents, where applicable
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Programme-specific application documents

For example, INSEAD's MBA application requires a CV, transcripts, diploma, two recommendations, GMAT/GRE score and English-language evidence where applicable.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at a Business School in France?

The cost of studying in France depends heavily on whether you study at a public institution or a private business school. Campus France's 2026 information states that differentiated tuition fees for non-EU students at eligible public higher education institutions are €3,950 per year for a Master's degree.

Private business schools generally charge considerably more. Campus France states that tuition at private institutions, including business schools, is generally higher and can vary significantly by institution and programme. The exact fee should therefore be checked on the official school website.

For example, Emlyon's Master in Management lists tuition of €22,000 per year, while the QS profile for ESCP Paris lists international tuition starting from €24,000. These figures illustrate why students should compare the exact programme rather than use a single France-wide tuition estimate.

What Is the France Student Visa Financial Requirement for Indian Students?

The financial requirement has changed and students should not rely on older guides that mention €615 per month. Campus France India states that, effective August 1, 2026, the minimum proof of financial resources required for a French student visa is €877.50 per month. France-Visas also confirms the revised €877.50 monthly threshold for long-stay study visa applications submitted from August 1, 2026.

Therefore, an article or application checklist using €615 per month as the current student-visa financial threshold would be outdated for applications from August 1, 2026 onward.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Applying to French Business Schools

  • Choosing a school only because of its ranking: Compare the exact programme, curriculum and career outcomes.
  • Confusing an MBA with a MiM: Their work-experience expectations can be very different.
  • Assuming GMAT is compulsory everywhere: Check whether CAT, GRE, TAGE MAGE or a school-specific test is accepted.
  • Ignoring English-test exemptions: Some schools exempt eligible English-medium graduates under specific conditions.
  • Using old visa information: The student visa financial threshold changed to €877.50 per month from August 1, 2026.
  • Submitting a generic SOP: Connect your background and career goals to the exact programme.
  • Applying at the last minute: Test scores, recommendations and document preparation can take time.
  • Using one budget for every French city: Accommodation and living costs vary by location.
  • Ignoring programme-specific deadlines: Each school and programme can have different application rounds.
  • Not preparing for the interview: Be ready to explain your academic profile, career plans and reasons for choosing the school.

Getting admission to the top business schools in France requires more than a high test score. Indian students should first select the right degree, then compare programme-specific eligibility, management-test requirements, English requirements, fees and deadlines.
