The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits are awarded for completed studies. ECTS is designed to facilitate and ease student transfers, academic recognition for periods of study, and credit accumulation.
It is because of the ECTS Credit system that students from European Countries can go to a foreign land and pursue a degree that is universally accepted all around the EU.

- One year of academics is equivalent to 60 ECTS Credits. This, in turn, is equivalent to 1500-1800 hours of the total workload.
- A 3-year bachelor’s Program would be equivalent to about 180 ECTS Credits.
- These credits are irrespective of the standard or qualification type. Varying from country to country, one ECTS credit point can equal on average between 25 - 30 study hours, also known as work hours. E.g. In countries like Germany, Belgium, Romania, etc. 1 ECTS means 30 study hours; whereas in Finland 1 ECTS is equivalent to 27 study hours.

How it Benefits the Students
- The ECTS Credits system is designed to simplify the lives of students. One can complete his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in two different EU countries as if it were in the same country. And because of this, finding work in the European countries would be easier because the degrees from different countries will also be recognized easily.

Just like the American Grading Scale, the ECTS grading scale is also based on the class percentile. The ECTS grading system shows the result of a student in comparison to other students in the same class. Before evaluating the students, the results are divided into two subgroups: pass and fail. If a student successfully scores the credits required to pass the course he is pursuing, he will be awarded a degree or certificate (as the case may be).
ECTS Grading Scale Explained
Following is the ECTS grading scale that is being followed by every educational institution linked with ECTS for every course:
- Grade A is awarded to the best 10 % of students. It defines the outstanding performance of the student in the course undertaken.
- Grade B is awarded to the next 25 % of students. This marks them above average as they committed some errors.
- Grade C is awarded to the next 30 % of students. It implies their work is generally sound. However, they have made notable errors.
- Grade D is given to the next 25 % of students.
- Grade E is marked for the next 10 % of students implying the student has just met the minimum criteria.
- Grade FX stands for fail (but can be passed if he gives some more work; almost passing).
- Grade F stands for fail (which means considerable further work is required)
The ECTS system is way more transparent in its approach than many national grading systems, and it helps compare your academic performance towards other students in Europe.
