MMU History
The university origin can be traced back to the establishment of Manchester Mechanics’ Institute in 1824. The main objective of the institute was to provide scientific education to workers in the era of the Industrial Revolution. In 1838, the Manchester School of Design was established to develop architectures of the future. In the late 19th century, my institutes were established catering to various fields. During the World Wars, the Institute helped in many ways including training and research. The current Manchester Metropolitan University was formed by the merger of these multiple institutes in 1992.
