History
Missouri State was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. The institution's primary goal in its early years was to prepare instructors for the public school districts of southwest Missouri. In 1906, the school's first class began with 543 students, using off-campus facilities. That same year, the school chose maroon and white as its colors for the 1906-07 academic year. In 1909, the first building on the Springfield campus, Academic Hall, was completed. In 1919, the school was renamed Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, replacing the original name.

Housing
The university maintains a number of residential halls located across the campus including: Blair-Shannon House, Freudenberger House, & Hammons House among others. Students can also opt to live as part of apartment based accommodation at the campus including: Monroe Apartments & the Sunvilla Tower.
The university takes care of all essential facilities students may need. Alternatively, students can also look for off-campus accommodation near the MSU campus by referring the official MSU off-campus resource, on the university's website.
