Brown’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs Gets New Inaugural Dean - John N. Friedman

Study in US: John N. Friedman has been a brown faculty member since 2015. He will take up the role of the new inaugural dean from July 1, 2025.
Study Abroad: John N. Friedman has been appointed as the inaugural dean of the Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University. He is currently leading research on policymaking, education, and social mobility. He is an economics and international and public affairs scholar.
While announcing his appointment, Brown President Christina H. Paxson and Provost Francis J. Doyle III jointly said, “John Friedman is an innovative educator and an adept leader with a remarkable scholarly record. He brings both the expertise and energy to guide Brown’s new school as it conducts timely research and provides its graduates with deep knowledge of policy and highly developed analytical skills that will enable them to serve their communities, the nation and the world.”
Friedman commented, “This new school offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build an interdisciplinary community of scholars, students and practitioners at Brown to address the world’s most pressing issues in international and public affairs. Brown is a leading generator of research and teaching on the major global, national and local issues of our time, and this is an incredible opportunity to advance this work, expand opportunities for students, and elevate the University’s visibility and impact.”
About John N. Friedman
He has been a Brown faculty member since 2015. He will take up this role in the new school from July 1, 2025, after the launch of the school. Watson School of International and Public Affairs will focus on advancing research and teaching on the political, social, and policy issues and pressing economic.
He served as chair of the Department of Economics from 2021 to 2024 at the Brown University, a tenure marked by the 30% growth in tenure-stream faculty, the expansion of its scholarship, and a deepening of the department’s expertise and reputation. In his new role, he will be leading the school in undergraduate and graduate education.
Friedman added, “Innovation comes from combining different perspectives in novel ways, and the collaborative spirit that is so present at Brown will enable the essential exchange of ideas and create pathways for scholars to step outside of their disciplinary environments. This cooperative ethos is embedded at Brown, which is the ideal environment to create this new community of scholars and learning.”
