Imperial College London To Develop AI Support Systems For Paediatric Intensive Care

Study in UK: Imperial’s AI Clinician has provided personalized and informed recommendations through advanced algorithms. These advices can consider the patients' full complexity.
Study Abroad: Imperial College London has collaborated with the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Under this collaboration, Imperial will develop AI support systems for paediatric intensive care. The experts from both partners are training the AI Clinician model to help paediatric doctors make fast and complex decisions and provide better recommendations for critically ill children.
Professor Aldo Faisal, Director for AI for Healthcare Centres and Imperial Global USA Academic Theme Lead is leading this research and has brought together the clinicians and researchers from the Department of Computing, Department of Bioengineering, and the Department of Surgery and Cancer, as well as the team of data scientists and clinicians at CHOC.
While commenting on the research, Professor Aldo Faisal said, “The gold-standard for developing and evaluating patient-ready AI technology is multi-centre international trials. This UK and US partnership and collaboration allow us to make our AI Clinician system smarter so that it can help children with a much broader diversity of conditions and medical backgrounds.”
Imperial, UK Science & Technology Network Host UK SynBio Reception
UK Science & Technology Network and Imperial Global USA co-hosted the UK SynBio Reception to explore transatlantic partnerships in engineering biology.
Imperial’s Vice Provost for Research and Enterprise Prof Mary Ryan said, "In health, it can be applied to advance disease treatment and prevention, and is pioneering drug discovery. Across other sectors it is fostering sustainable industrial processes through innovative materials, boosting energy production, and revolutionising agriculture and food systems. Imperial is home to many cutting-edge engineering biology initiatives that maximise the science's potential to transform our lives and protect our planet. Joining forces with US partners will deepen this impact even further."
“This event brought together a powerful mix of voices across science, policy, and innovation to ask vital questions, particularly around the challenges and opportunities around scaling," said Imperial synthetic biology spinout Solena’s Gabriele Verikaite.
Dr Drew Endy Associate Professor of Bioengineering from Stanford University and Hoover Institution commented, "arrive from the future” bringing bold visions of the world they want to live in. He acknowledged that the UK has made commendable investments in engineering biology, while in the US, there is still has some work to do to achieve sustained government funding."
