Are you planning to study in New Zealand? Well, there are some announcements that you should know. Changes are related to post study work visa and employment rules for International students.

New Zealand Announces Changes in Work Visa Rules and New Post-Study Work Options

New Zealand has announced two major immigration updates for international students, including those from India who want to study and work in the country. The government will introduce new employment conditions for open work visa holders from 20 April 2026 and new post-study work visa options from late 2026.

These changes aim to make visa rules clearer and help graduates move from study to employment in New Zealand. Students planning to work after completing their degree should understand these updates before applying for visas.

New Zealand Updates Employment Rules for Open Work Visa Holders

From 20 April 2026, open work visas will have two different employment conditions depending on the visa type.

Key Changes

Visa Type New Employment Condition
Group 1: Post Study Work Visa, Partner of a Student/Worker Any work allowed. Visa holders can work for any employer, become a sole trader, or run their own business.
Group 2: Working Holiday Visa, Migrant Exploitation Protection Visa Employer-only work. Visa holders must work for an employer under an employment agreement. Running a business is not allowed.

Note for Indian students: These rules do not apply to student visa holders, but they may affect graduates who apply for work visas after finishing their studies.

New Post-Study Work Visa Options for International Graduates

New Zealand will also introduce new and updated post-study work visa pathways from late 2026. These changes are designed to help graduates transition from study to employment.

Short Term Graduate Work Visa (New)

new Short Term Graduate Work Visa will allow some graduates to stay and work in New Zealand for up to 6 months.

Key details:

  • Must complete at least 24 weeks of full-time study (NZQCF Level 5 to 7) in New Zealand

  • Must show NZD 5,000 in funds for living expenses

  • Must apply within 3 months after the student visa expires

  • Business ownership is not allowed under this visa

This visa mainly helps graduates who do not qualify for the regular Post Study Work Visa but still want time to find employment.

Expanded Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)

New Zealand has also expanded eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa.

  • Students completing a Graduate Diploma (Level 7) can now qualify

  • Applicants must already hold a bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or overseas)

  • The visa duration will match the length of study in New Zealand, up to 1 year

This visa allows graduates to work in New Zealand and support partner work visas and children’s student visas.

Important: Students can usually receive only one Post Study Work Visa or Short Term Graduate Work Visa, so planning your study pathway carefully is important.
