New Zealand is changing its post-study work visa rules starting Monday, 16 November 2026. These updates will help Indian graduates stay, work, and build careers in the country. Here is what you need to know about the two major updates.
New Short-Term Graduate Visa in NZ
Have a quick overview of this visa:
- What it is: A brand-new visa for students who do not qualify for the longer Post-Study Work Visa.
- Work Rights: It gives you 6 months to stay and work for almost any employer.
- The Goal: Use these 6 months to find a job that can sponsor your long-term work visa.
- Who can apply: Indian students who finish a full-time course (Level 5 to 7) for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand.
- Money needed: You must prove you have at least NZD 5,000 in your bank account.
-
Rules: You must apply within 3 months after your student visa ends. You can only get this visa once. You cannot start a business or sponsor your family.
Expanded Post-Study Work Visa in NZ (PSWV)
Have a quick overview of this visa:
- Graduate Diplomas: If you finish a Level 7 Graduate Diploma, you can now get a 1-year work visa.
- Degree Rule: You must also have a bachelor's degree. This degree can be from an Indian university.
- No Hard Checks: You do not need a complex qualification assessment. Just show your degree and transcripts.
- Green List Exception: If you do not have a bachelor's degree, you can still get this visa if your diploma is on New Zealand's "Green List" for shortage jobs.
New Zealand wants to grow its international education sector by 2034. Indian students must plan carefully. If you choose a short course, make sure it links to a 1-year visa or a Green List job. Just remember two things about this new change.
-
One-time offer: You can only get each of these visas once in your lifetime. If you already have a Post-Study Work Visa, you cannot get another one.
-
No Degree? If you have a Graduate Diploma but no bachelor's degree, you can only get the 1-year visa if your course is on New Zealand’s official Green List (Appendix 13). If it is not on the list, you can only apply for the 6-month Short-term Visa.
