Seoul Public Libraries Extends Operating Hours
122 public libraries in Seoul will now have extended operating hours until 10 pm. Earlier it was open only till 6 pm. The time has been increased to provide more reading time to students and workers.
"This year, the role of libraries as open cultural spaces during extreme heat and cold will be significantly enhanced. By encouraging citizens to use libraries rather than operating individual heating and cooling systems at home, the project aims to reduce household energy costs and contribute to climate crisis response efforts. Through the extended nighttime operations and the ‘OFF&LIBRARY’ campaign, individuals who previously found it difficult to visit libraries during the day will now have more access. This initiative is expected to lower psychological barriers to library visits, increase opportunities for citizens to engage with books, and ultimately boost the overall reading rate," reads the government statement.
