SBS PhD Researcher In Final Of SGSSS Impact Competition

For her research into the gig economy, the PhD researcher Jenna Gilmartin, Department of Work, Employment and Organisation of SBS, has been selected in the 2025 Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS) Impact Competition. This year, a total of eight candidates have been selected for the SGSSS competition. Jenna's research was titled - "Sorry We Missed You: The Unheard Voices of the Independent Retail Gig Economy".

"It gives voice to the often overlooked delivery workers trapped in insecure paid gig economy work. Hidden behind algorithmic control, they face unstable hours and poor protections. As new UK legislation promises change as part of the Employment Rights Bill, smaller employers risk falling short. Jenna's study exposes the reality for the workers and demands urgent action for fairer work. By investigating the workers' experiences and expectations, Jenna seeks to highlight the precarious nature of their work and advocate for improved conditions and right," says the SBS statement.
