Study In US: Six Brown Scholars Elected To American Academy Of Arts and Sciences

Brown University scholars have been elected as members of one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies - the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Study Abroad: Six scholars of Brown University have been elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. These scholars are among a cohort of 250 new members including leading thinkers in business, public affairs, science, arts, and the humanities. They are selected through a competitive process for their outstanding contributions to their disciplines and society.
The names of these scholars include - Jennifer Nuzzo, a professor of epidemiology, Kim Cobb, a professor of earth, environmental, and planetary sciences and a professor of environment and society, George Karniadakis, a professor of engineering and applied mathematics, John Diamond, a professor of sociology and education policy, Dr. Ashish K. Jha, a professor of health services, policy and practice and dean of Brown’s School of Public Health, and Karen Fischer, a professor of earth, environmental and planetary sciences.
Brown University Provost Francis J. Doyle III said, “The election of these six esteemed Brown University faculty members to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is a meaningful recognition of their wide-ranging impact on scholarship and policy to advance solutions to society’s most pressing challenges and opportunities, from climate change and education to public health and machine learning. This distinct honor, which acknowledges the impact of their rigorous research and scholarship, is a testament to the power of academic freedom, in-depth study and free inquiry to advance the knowledge and understanding that is critical to academic excellence.”

The new members join the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr and Margaret Mead. This year American Academy of Arts and Sciences members include prominent scholars, artists, and leaders, including Amy Tan, Gloria Steinem, and Jose Andres.
