UK Government Offers £500m To Universities To Fund New Post-Graduate Places In Science

Study in UK: To celebrate National Engineering Day, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology UK has announced a whopping £500m to fund 4,700 new post-graduate places in science at UK universities.

The fund aims at a better future with significant discoveries and an expert workforce required to grow the country's economy. The government is all set to create the next generation of groundbreaking scientists.

Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, said, "Backing the next generation of great scientific minds to fulfil their potential is crucial to unlocking the discoveries which improve our lives and keep our economy growing over the long term through highly skilled jobs. This £500 million investment will support our vitally important higher education sector while supporting more bright students to pursue their talents and in turn deliver the life-saving drugs and clean energy alternatives of the future, that benefit all of our lives."

Students Experiences

The students who have already benefitted from this have spoken to the government to share their experiences. Following are the comments from such students:

"I was fortunate to receive a PhD studentship to pursue Interdisciplinary Bioscience at the University of Oxford, which supported both my research project and my development as a scientist. Through the studentship, I completed an internship in venture capital, which introduced me to the world of startup formation, financing, and translating science into products," Ross Hendron, Co-Founder & CEO of Wild Bioscience.

Dr Jennifer Olsen, a Biomedical Engineer, who is currently focusing on research on upper-limb prosthetics said, "My UKRI-funded PhD studentship provided an excellent foundation for my current academic role, allowing me to conduct multidisciplinary research, establish my own network of healthcare and industry contacts, collaborate freely thanks to the travel funding I had access to, and share my work globally through publishing and engagement activities."

The focus areas will be where universities are already strong. More than 47,00 students and 45 higher education institutes are involved in the next generation of groundbreaking discoveries. The funding will open doors for bright students to study projects in engineering, biological, natural environmental and physical sciences.
