The required specialization consists of 80 ECTS credits, including a minimum of 30 ECTS credit courses at a basic, Norwegian university level (equivalent to 1000-level UiO courses), and a minimum of 20 ECTS credit courses at the advanced level (2000- and 3000-level UiO courses). The following must be included:
- 10 ECTS credits within mathematics or statistics
- 10 ECTS credits within informatics or cybernetics
- 10 ECTS credits within physics or electronics or mechanics or material science
- 50 ECTS credits within natural sciences selected from up to three of the following fields:
- Mathematics
- Informatics/cybernetics
- Physics
- Electronics
