Raman Charpak Fellowship: The Raman Charpak Fellowship Programme was introduced in honour of the two Indian and French Noble Laureates, both in Physics, i.e. Prof. C.V. Raman in 1930 (Indian) and Prof Georges Charpak in 1992 (French). The fellowship programme is intended to promote advanced research among Indian and French students.
The Raman Charpak Fellowship Programme was launched in 2013 during the state visit of French President, François Hollande in India. The fellowship is aimed at improving the advanced research skills among Indian and French students by means of providing them the opportunity to carry out part of their research in an Indian or French university (or research institute).
The Raman Charpak Fellowship programme is implemented by Indo French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/ CEFIPRA) both in India and France. The program also allows French students pursuing a master’s degree/course in France to come and spend some course of their academic duration in an Indian institution, in accordance with their curriculum.

What is the Raman Charpak Fellowship?
The Raman Charpak Fellowship programme is a kind of student exchange programme aimed at improving the research skills of Indian and French students by providing stipends to move from India to France (and vice-versa) to do part(s) of their research work in the other nation (out of India and France).
The program may last from 2 to 6 months and during this period, the exchanged students may attend workshops, seminars and /or conferences in the host country on facilitated financial/accommodation support.

Raman Charpak Fellowship Amount
There are numerous benefits to availing of a Raman Charpak Fellowship. However, the major offerings of this fellowship are given below.
- For Indian students: The Indian research scholars in France get monthly support of €1500 to cover their daily life expenses like travel, food and accommodation plus the social security charges.
- For French students: The French students in India get a monthly support amount of ₹40,000 to cover their daily expenses (travel, food, etc.) and a monthly accommodation support amount not exceeding ₹45,000.
- Both Indian and French students receive one economy-class return airfare ticket.
- Students also get travel and health insurance coverage (wherever required) and Carte de Sejour, if required.
- Students are also provided support for attending any workshop, seminar or conference in the host country. Students are advised to check the specific guidelines for the same.
Who Can Get a Raman Charpak Fellowship?
The Raman Charpak Fellowships are available to the PhD research scholars in India and France and the master’s students in France (Indian master’s students are not eligible). These scholars must be enrolled into a PhD programme within any Indian or French institution/research centre.
Additionally, this fellowship can also be availed by French students pursuing a master’s degree in France. However, master’s students in India still cannot avail of this programme.
Raman Charpak Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
Below are the requirements to be eligible to apply for the Raman Charpak Fellowship programme either from India or France.
- For Indian students: Students must be residing in India and registered with a PhD programme at an eligible university/research institution.
- For French students: Students must be residing in France and registered for either a PhD programme or a master’s degree course at an eligible university/research institution.
- The students cannot be more than 30 years of age as of April 01 of the year of application.
- Students already once supported by CEFIPRA cannot apply.
- Students having a permanent position in a university or research institution cannot apply.
- Prior consent or pre-authorisation must be presented by students from their home country’s university/research organisation.

How to Get Raman Charpak Fellowship 2024?
To get started, one must fill out the Raman Charpak Fellowship 2024 Application Form by visiting the official website, i.e. www.cefipra.org. Make sure to check the eligibility criteria for the fellowship and proceed to fill out the application form only upon successfully meeting the eligibility requirements.
Please note that the applications for the Raman Charpak Fellowships 2024 are closed. The applications for the Raman Charpak Fellowships 2025 will be released during the month of April 2025.
Raman Charpak Fellowship Results
Raman Charpak Fellowship 2024 Results will be released by the month of August or September (tentatively). The results are released on the official website, www.cefipra.org, under the “Mobility/Fellowships” widget. Following the widget, on clicking “awardees”, the list of awardees of the Raman Charpak Fellowships of the current year is presented.
The Raman Charpak Fellowships result consists of the following details:
- Name of the awardee
- Area of expertise (subject)
- Name of the supervisor and the PhD registered institution in the home country
- Name of the supervisor and the PhD registered institution in the host country

Q. What are the differences between the Raman Charpak Fellowship and the Charpak Scholarship?
A. The Raman Charpak Fellowships support the Indian and French research scholars in conducting some part of their research in another country (out of India and France) for a period of 2 to 6 months.
The Charpak Scholarships provide financial support for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in three main types - Charpak Lab Scholarships, Charpak Master’s Scholarships and Charpak Exchange Scholarships.

A. The Raman Charpak Fellowship provide financial support for the exchange research students’ travel, lodging and other expenses in the host country.
