SOP for Hong Kong University Requirements

Typically only one SOP is required, irrespective of the number of programs you are applying to, in a particular university, in Hong Kong. However, SOP requirements for Hong Kong for different universities, at each study level, are different. SOP for Hong Kong Undergraduate Courses

Here are some of the top universities’ document requirements for undergraduate programmes:

The University of Hong Kong (HKU): HKU expects you to prepare an SOP that is defines your journey, vision and aspirations clearly. The HKU personal statement word limit is within 800-1000 words. An HKU personal statement should clearly explain about your interest in studying the program, what makes you an eligible candidate for the program and how that particular program will benefit you.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST): HKUST does not have any limit for SOPs. However, the absence of any HKUST personal statement word limit may cause applicants to write lengthy and generic SOPs, which may reduce their overall impact. Hence, it is important to be precise and highlight your academic strengths and interest in the said program in the HKUST personal statement. You must also talk about relevant experiences and your future aspirations post the completion of the program in the personal statement.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: For PolyU, it is optional for UG students to submit a personal statement. However, it is still advisable to submit your PolyU personal statement, as it allows you to explain things that cannot be included in your resume, e.g. gap years, academic or personal challenges you have overcome, etc. Adding this in your Hong Kong Polytechnic University Personal Statement,   can improve your chances of getting selected and also gives you the opportunity to explain yourself better.

SOP for Hong Kong Postgraduate Courses

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST): The majority of the programs taught here require an SOP, whereas for research-based programs SOPs are optional. The University of Hong Kong: Only a handful of the programs taught here require an LOM/SOP, though a statement of research interest may be asked for research-based programs. The other courses here may require a Personal Statement, or essays/questionnaires. PhD and MPhil courses here may require a research proposal not exceeding 8 pages in length.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: The majority of the programs here require a personal statement along with some subject-specific requirements. Most of the programmes require a personal statement with subject-wise specific requirements, where the word limit may range from 200 to 1000 words as per the course and the document itself should be limited to one page.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong: Various programs of CUHK have made personal statements optional. The CUHK personal statement requirements also differ greatly based on the course, but are generally centred on your motivations for joining the program and your future aspirations.

City University of Hong Kong: The university asks for an SOP within 500-1,000 words as per course specifications which should cover the following points:

• Why do you feel you are eligible to pursue this programme and how it will benefit you?
• Brief description of employment history and past international experience.
• Why you are applying to the program?
• How will you fit into the curriculum and the university?
• How you will use the programme for career advancement?
• What are your career goals and how this degree will help in achieving them?
• Briefly highlight the quantitative and analytical skills acquired during undergraduate studies.

SOP for Hong Kong: Writing Tips

You can also have a look at what not to include in an SOP. Apart from content, you need to take care of the formatting as well, which includes:

• Font style and font size: Use Times New Roman 12pt font size, unless specified otherwise.
• Word limit:Usually universities prefer a word limit of 1000-1200 words, or one-page or two-page SOP unless any other specific instructions are given. Essay answers will have a shorter word limit of 200-500 words, per essay.
• Grammar check:Give a thorough reading before finalizing your SOP; don’t forget to do a grammar check. Poor grammar reflects poorly on the candidate.
