SOP for Hong Kong: Universities Guidelines for UG/PG Courses
A Statement of Purpose (SOP) or a Personal Statement is a crucial aspect of your application for global universities. If you are applying for Hong Kong universities (HKUs), an HKU SOP is a crucial and mandatory document that you need to prepare. Whether you are an undergraduate or post-graduate applicant, there are several nuances and best practices that you must be aware of before drafting your SOP for Hong Kong universities. This article discusses several guidelines and approaches to help you create an effective and impactful HKU personal statement that can land you a coveted seat at your dream college.
For students aiming to study in Hong Kong, an SOP helps the university understand why you're a good fit for their program. Hong Kong is a great place to study because it has excellent universities and offers many cultural and career opportunities. When writing an SOP for Hong Kong, you should show why you want to study there and how it fits with your future plans. A good SOP will help you stand out and show the university that you're the right choice for their program.
Along with your HKU personal statement requirements, your Resume and Letters of Recommendation (LORs) also play a crucial role in helping an admissions committee decide on your candidature. However, your SOP carries a lot more weightage as compared to other documents as it allows you to express your motivations, passion, achievements and vision in more detail. Generally, SOPs or personal statements for any country or university are majorly similar in content, i.e., a generic SOP should cover these points:
- Academic and professional background: This may include all relevant experiences, academic and personal, that led you towards the field of your choice. You can also discuss the topics that interest you the most and the relevant coursework, research, projects or hands-on experiences that you have gained so far.
- Motivation to study the selected course: Ensure that you convey to the universities about your reasons for wanting to join the program. Mention what incident, learning or personal/professional experiences inspired you to pursue you field of study. You can also discuss why you are passionate about the said field and what you want to do with the advanced knowledge that you will gain from the program in the future.
- Achievements and learnings: If you have relevant professional experiences or notable work that are related to the field that you are applying for, or achievements that showcase you as a good prospective candidate, be sure to discuss then in your HKU SOP. Additionally, while discussing any project, internship, or training be sure to mention your contribution/role and learning from each experience.
- Career goals: Be sure to mention both your short-term and long-term goals post the completion of the program. Whether your future aspirations involve advanced studies, research or professional growth, mention the kind of contributions or impact you want to have in the field of your study in your Hong Kong University personal statement. You can also mention the specific designations or roles you want to take up after the completion of the program.
- Reasons to choose this particular university: After researching about the university and its course, you must also elaborate on the reasons why you chose the particular university. Also, keeping your future aspirations in mind, discuss how studying in that particular university will be beneficial for you. You can talk about specific facilities, industrial partnerships, research opportunities, faculties or electives at the university that interest you.

Here are some of the top universities’ document requirements for undergraduate programmes:
The University of Hong Kong (HKU): HKU expects you to prepare an SOP that is defines your journey, vision and aspirations clearly. The HKU personal statement word limit is within 800-1000 words. An HKU personal statement should clearly explain about your interest in studying the program, what makes you an eligible candidate for the program and how that particular program will benefit you.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST): HKUST does not have any limit for SOPs. However, the absence of any HKUST personal statement word limit may cause applicants to write lengthy and generic SOPs, which may reduce their overall impact. Hence, it is important to be precise and highlight your academic strengths and interest in the said program in the HKUST personal statement. You must also talk about relevant experiences and your future aspirations post the completion of the program in the personal statement.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: For PolyU, it is optional for UG students to submit a personal statement. However, it is still advisable to submit your PolyU personal statement, as it allows you to explain things that cannot be included in your resume, e.g. gap years, academic or personal challenges you have overcome, etc. Adding this in your Hong Kong Polytechnic University Personal Statement, can improve your chances of getting selected and also gives you the opportunity to explain yourself better.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong: The SOP for this university needs to be within two pages of an A4-sized page, with an emphasis on your reasons for choosing their program. SOP for Hong Kong: Writing Tips
You can also have a look at what not to include in an SOP. Apart from content, you need to take care of the formatting as well, which includes:
- Font style and font size: Use Times New Roman 12pt font size, unless specified otherwise.
- Word limit:Usually universities prefer a word limit of 1000-1200 words, or one-page or two-page SOP unless any other specific instructions are given. Essay answers will have a shorter word limit of 200-500 words, per essay.
- Grammar check:Give a thorough reading before finalizing your SOP; don’t forget to do a grammar check. Poor grammar reflects poorly on the candidate.
- Plagiarism:All foreign universities are very strict when it comes to copying content from any other sources. Be true to yourself and write your draft yourself relating to your experiences. Be original!
- Vocabulary:Avoid the use of fancy words and too much technical jargon, unless it is a requirement of the course. Keep your vocabulary rich yet simple, so that the document has a smooth flow of language and content.
